WRIGHT STATE OFFERING NEW MAJOR IN
INDUSTRIAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

This fall, Wright State University became the first university in the Dayton region to offer an undergraduate degree in industrial and systems engineering. With input from students, alumni and employers, a curriculum was developed that gives students core knowledge in industrial engineering. Students may then choose one of four focus tracks to complete the degree requirements.

Industrial and Systems Engineers (ISEs) figure out how to do things better. They engineer processes and systems that improve quality and productivity. They can devise a more efficient way to distribute products, streamline an operating room, or shorten a roller coaster line. Hospitals, airlines, banks, railroads, and social service agencies are some of the employers that have hired ISEs to help improve quality and productivity.

"Our program emphasizes a user-centered design approach," says Richard J. Koubek, Ph.D., associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. ISEs work with people to help them do their jobs better, faster and safer. As a result, ISEs help companies save money and remain competitive.

Today, businesses are hiring ISEs in areas such as sales and marketing, finance, information systems, and human resources. ISEs are finding job opportunities at companies such as Coca-Cola, UPS, Disney, IBM, Levi-Strauss, Nike, The Gap, Intel, Microsoft, Motorola, Boeing and others.

Along with the industrial and systems engineering major, students completing the computer and information systems track can apply for a minor in computer science for scientists and engineers. Students completing the operations management track are eligible for the operations management minor offered through Wright State's College of Business and Administration.
