WRIGHT STATE TO OFFER NEW
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MAJOR
Ohio is among the nation's largest exporters. Two-thirds of the state's businesses are
involved in international trade, and the state's international trade continues to grow. This fall
Wright State University is offering a new major in international business. The unique
curriculum requires applied foreign language skills in Spanish, French or German and an
internship in international trade management. It also combines courses in culture and
international business.
Within Wright State's College of Business and Administration, students take a combination of international courses in each functional area of business including marketing, accountancy, finance, management and economics. Applied modern language courses are offered through Wright State's department of modern languages. Students selecting the international business major should want a broad background and applied experiences for administrative careers that require competency in language, culture, and international business operations.
"With the growth of export and import trade by business in Ohio, the Ohio economy is becoming more globalized," said Barbara E. Hopkins, Ph.D., assistant professor of economics. Local companies have also supported the new international business major. Many say students with international business backgrounds will be strong candidates for employment.
"Our goal is to realize 50 percent of our sales outside North America within the next few years," said Susan M. Chicoine, PD general manager for Systran Corporation. "I believe this program will provide an excellent source of candidates for future positions with the company."
Hopkins says Wright State hopes to enroll 25 international business majors this year, with a goal of educating 75 majors in five years. For more information on the international business major, contact the Division of Community Programs at (937) 775-2814.
