WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY
JOINS INTERNET2 PROJECT

Wright State University has been accepted into Internet2, a high-tech test lab for technologies that will shape the commercial Internet for the 21st century.

A collaboration between the top 150 research institutions in the U.S., industry and government, Internet2 gives university researchers a faster, less-crowded alternative to the current model.

“Wright State University’s strong tradition of research and innovation is fully supportive of the mission and goals of Internet2,” said Kim Goldenberg, M.D., Wright State University president. “We are eager to join with Internet2 university members and government and industry partners to accelerate the next stage of Internet development. Together we can support educational priorities and national research efforts that require advanced network capabilities.”

Operating at speeds 100 times faster than the current Internet, Internet2 will give researchers a quicker, less-crowded alternative to the Internet. In the works since 1996, Internet2 is not intended to replace the current Internet, but to give universities another way to develop advanced Internet technologies. The limited space and bandwidth of the commercial Internet makes experiments on these cutting-edge technologies difficult for researchers.

Although Internet2 won’t provide links to the World Wide Web or e-mail accounts, its developments will eventually find their way into nearly every computer network, including the Internet. The goal of Internet2 is to transform how people work with computers and each other.
