KIM GOLDENBERG INAUGURATED
AS FIFTH PRESIDENT OF WRIGHT STATE

Kim Goldenberg was inaugurated as Wright State University's fifth president Friday, in a ceremony held in the Ervin J. Nutter Center. The theme of the inauguration was "Wright State University—The Spirit of Innovation for the 21st Century."

The former dean of the university's School of Medicine, Goldenberg outlined the opportunities the university and the community face. "In the next century, we face serious challenges in at least three major areas — culture, technology and human justice," said Goldenberg. "But challenges for me have always been opportunities: If you can conceive it, you can achieve it. To achieve a future that is strong and inn ovative in culture and technology and human justice will require continued commitment from our Board of Trustees, our university administration, faculty, staff, students, alumni and our community partners. Nothing less will do."

Goldenberg was sworn in by Jo Ann Davidson, Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives. "The presidents I've known during my career share similar qualities," Davidson said. "They were bright, energetic, compassionate, results oriented, had worked in the trenches, were great c ommunicators, and they had a sense of humor. Dr. Goldenberg has all of these qualities." Representatives from five countries and delegates from institutions across the United States joined the Wright State faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends fo r the festivities. Thomas E. Palmer, chairman of the university's Board of Trustees presided over the ceremony.

Goldenberg was appointed president of Wright State University on April 9, 1998, following the death of Harley E. Flack. He joined the WSU fa culty in 1983 and served as dean of the medicine from 1990 to 1998.

As dean, Goldenberg led the school's research program to a 100 percent increase in productivity. This growth helped to place the university third among 15 public universes in the stat e. His guidance also resulted in the school's becoming second in the nation in primary care graduates and in the top 10 percent of women and minority students.

Goldenberg serves on two national councils of presidents and the Ohio Science and Technolog y council. He has been named to the boards of the Miami Valley Economic Development Coalition, Information Technology Alliance, Miami Valley Research Foundation and the Dayton Area Graduate Studies Institute. Goldenberg is a member of the Midwestern Colle giate Conference, the 2003 Committee, the Downtown Dayton Partnership and is an advisor to the Special Wish Foundation for Children.

A native of New York, Goldenberg received his M.D. degree from Albany Medical College and served his internal medicine residency at the Western Reserve Care System in northeastern Ohio. He also holds a B.S. degree in engineering science from State University of New York at Stoney Brook and an M.S. degree in bioengineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York.
