Hi-Res Image
Hi-Res Image Joyce Howes, assistant dean in the College of Science and Mathematics at Wright State University, is the recipient of the WSU President's Award for Excellence in Service. The award, presented at an annual ceremony by WSU President Kim Goldenberg, was given to Howes for her skills in teaching, administration and mentoring and her work on numerous university committees, including a term as chair of the Unclassified Staff Advisory Council.

Along with her administrative responsibilities, Howes manages to advise at least 15 students a week and teach SM198, "Introduction to Science and Mathematics." This course is a freshman seminar designed to help students develop collaborative skills and cooperative learning strategies.

Howes also participates in "Glimpse of College," a program presented by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for African American high school students. She represented the College of Science and Mathematics at Spring Career Days for high school students and advised nontraditional and transfer students during the "College Night for Adults" and "Transfer Day" programs.

"She is an absolutely outstanding individual who is a great asset to the university," said Dick Rathbun, Ph.D., assistant dean in the College of Engineering and Computer Science, in his letter of nomination. "Howes leads by example. She is never to busy too volunteer for a task that needs to be done and is perfectly willing to do the work required, as well as leading others to the goal."
