Wright State University’s 2000 Summer Honors Institute will provide special courses this summer for academically gifted students who will be high school sophomores or juniors in September. The Office of Pre-College Programs will offer one- and two-week-long programs for students interested in law, writing or theatre. Institute participants will live in a Wright State residence hall and eat meals on campus. Students may get an insider’s view of the American legal system during the Law and Society program, Sunday, June 25, through Friday, June 30. Students will learn from legal experts and practitioners, take field trips, complete their own research and argue a case before a jury. Creativity, self-expression, and the writing process will be explored during the Creative Writing program, also scheduled for June 25-30. Students will spend the mornings in writing workshops, while the afternoons will be devoted to their choice of poetry, fictional short stories, and screenplay writing. Those with theatre in their blood may choose from among two Theatrical Arts programs. Students in Technical Theatre, scheduled for Sunday, July 2, through Friday, July 7, will go behind the scenes to explore the design, technology and craftsmanship of a production. Performance Theatre students will spend two weeks on campus, July 2-14, and experience the everyday life of a working company. Students will be instructed in stage movement, voice and character development. They’ll participate in seminars on theatre history, and then cast and produce a full-length play for an audience. Fees for the Creative Writing, Law and Society, and Technical Theatre programs are $180, which includes housing and meals for one week on campus. The fee for the two-week Performance Theatre program is $360. The Ohio Department of Education funds the Summer Honors Institutes for gifted and talented students.
