WRIGHT STATE AWARDS 38 GRADUATE
STUDENT EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Wright State University's School of Graduate Studies has announced the recipients of the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Awards. Presented to an outstanding student in each university graduate program, the awards recognize the recipients' superior academic achievement, noteworthy thesis work and potential for significant contributions to their fields. Recipients are selected by the faculty in their respective programs.

Nicole Schneider
Nicole Schneider has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Biomedical and Human Factors Engineering at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. A student in the human factors engineering program, Schneider has served as a graduate teaching assistant and as a student member on Wright State's Board of Trustees. Her master's thesis research has resulted in two conference papers and a published journal article.

Cindy Plank
Cindy Plank has been selected by the Department of Geological Sciences at Wright State to receive its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award in the master of science in teaching-Earth science program. Plank's master's research project has attracted more than 8,000 hits on her department's web site. She will be presenting on the use of technology in science education at the Geological Society of America.

Beth Wheeler
Beth Wheeler has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of English Language and Literatures at Wright State University. A student in the composition and rhetoric program, Wheeler's outstanding course plans have been adopted by several faculty members at Wright State.

Greta Burkart
Greta Burkart has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Biological Sciences at Wright State University. Burkart is completing a research project on the ecosystem of Lake Erie. Parts of her research have been submitted for publication in ecological research journals.

Christine Grogan
Christine Grogan has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of English Language and Literatures at Wright State. The outstanding student in the literature program was selected to receive the award for her critical abilities and her commitment to literary studies.

Kimberly Gilliam
Kimberly Gilliam has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Human Services at Wright State. The outstanding student in the counseling program works as a graduate assistant in Wright State's Office of Career Services, and has volunteered for Womanline and Sterling House.

Robert Edwards
Robert Edwards has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Biomedical and Human Factors Engineering at Wright State University. A student in the biomedical engineering program, Edwards has authored a paper to be presented at the 1999 Annual Conference of the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America.

Karen Cartwright
Karen Cartwright has recieved the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Music at Wright State. Cartwright is a student in the music education program and a bassoon player in the orchestral program.

Jacqueline Eppley
Jacqueline Eppley has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Educational Leadership at Wright State. Selected as the outstanding teacher leader student, Eppley has served on the Teacher Leader Advisory Council and earned her degree while maintaining her career as a public school teacher.

Eric Gieman
Eric Gieman has received the 1999 Graduate Excellence Award from the biomedical sciences Ph.D. program at Wright State. Gieman, whose dissertation focuses on spinal neurons, attained the program's highest grade point average during the 1997-98 academic year.

Guosong Li
Guosong Li has been selected by the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State to receive its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award. The outstanding student in the Engineering Ph.D. program has conducted research in design optimization, and recently presented his work at the 24th Annual Dayton-Cincinnati Aerospace Science Symposium held in Dayton.

Megan Matanzo
Megan Matanzo has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the College of Business and Administration at Wright State. The outstanding student in the MBA-management information systems program has worked with faculty to develop web pages for the college and maintains an alumni-mentoring web site.

Noah Phelps
Noah Phelps has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of History at Wright State. Phelps is completing coursework and a thesis for a master's degree in public history.

Charlene Swank
Charlene Swank has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award in the MBA-management program from the College of Business Administration at Wright State. Swank has been previously named the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year by the Society for Human Resource Management, an honor bestowed upon the top graduate student in the field.

Chuancai Wang
Chuancai Wang has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Wright State. A student in the applied statistics program, Wang has served as a student assistant in a diabetes mellitus research project involving Wright State's Department of Family Medicine.

Yang Xiao
Yang Xiao has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Wright State. A student in the Ph.D. program, Xiao has served as a graduate research assistant and passed the Ph.D. qualifier exam shortly after joining the program.

Ying Xu
Ying Xu has been selected by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Wright State University to receive its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award. A student in the computer science program, Xu has served as a graduate assistant.

Yujie Zhang
Yujie Zhang has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Economics at Wright State. A student in the social and applied economics program, Zhang completed an internship report titled "An Empirical Study of the Relationship Between Democracy and Prosperity."

Erin Sesslar
Erin Sesslar has been selected by the Department of Geological Sciences at Wright State for its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award. A student in geophysics, Sesslar has presented her research at the 1999 Symposium on the Application of Geophysics to Engineering and Environmental Problems.

Paul Rhynard
Paul Rhynard has been selected by the Department of Human Services at Wright State to receive its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award in the rehabilitation counseling program. Concentrating in severe disabilities, Rhynard hopes to help transplant recipients acquire vocational skills.

Karla Hibbert-Jones
Karla Hibbert-Jones has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Urban Affairs and Geography at Wright State. A student in the master of urban administration program, Hibbert-Jones directs Project Read, a non-profit organization addressing adult literacy in Ohio.

Kelly Gaudette
Kelly Gaudette has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Teacher Education at Wright State. Gaudette, a classroom teacher-business education major, has previously received the Catherine Maurer Haverstock Fellowship and has performed extensive work for the School-to-Work project.

Priya Batra
Priya Batra has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the School of Professional Psychology at Wright State. A student in the Doctor of Psychology program in clinical psychology, Batra has been active in the community through her service with the Artemis Center for Alternatives to Domestic Violence, and through her work with people living with AIDS.

Donna Stroh
Donna Stroh has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Wright State. Stroh was selected for the award for her academic record and for her performance as a graduate teaching assistant.

Tam Czarnick, M.D.
Tam Czarnick, M.D., has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Aerospace Medicine program at Wright State. Czarnick serves as chair of the Ohio Mars Society, and is an unparalleled in his understanding of the requirements for human existence on the planet Mars.

Jeffrey Horn
Jeffrey Horn has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Anatomy at Wright State. Horn is conducting research that will contribute to an increased understanding of stroke and cardiovascular diseases.

Catherine Crowley
Catherine Crowley has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of English Language and Literatures at Wright State. A student in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program, Crowley applies her knowledge to designing assignments that challenge her students.

Barbara Beaver
Barbara Beaver was selected by Wright State's Department of Educational Leadership to receive its 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award. The outstanding student in the Student Affairs in Higher Education-Administration program was selected for her superior conceptual thinking, writing and analytical skills.

Rory Korzan
Rory Korzan has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Chemistry at Wright State University. Korzan, a former high school teacher, has served as a graduate teaching assistant with teaching duties in the chemistry for elementary education majors course.

Ignacio Roca
Iganacio Roca has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Wright State University. Roca, a student in the materials and engineering program, plans to continue his education at Wright State as a student in the Engineering Ph.D. program.

Kathryn Easterday
Kathryn Easterday has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Accountancy at Wright State. Easterday received the award for her intellectual curiosity and diligence in academics, and will be pursuing a career in public accounting at Arthur Anderson.

Qiuhua Li
Quihua Li has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Wright State. The outstanding student in the mechanical engineering program previously received a doctorate in materials science in China, and will be presenting two research papers at the Asia-Pacific Vibration Conference.

Dina LeClair
Dina LeClair has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the master of humanities program at Wright State. LeClair's thesis combines study in politics, history, religion and women's studies.

Nathan Kragick
Nathan Kragick has been selected by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Wright State to receive the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award. The outstanding student in the Computer Engineering program was selected for his ability to provide practical solutions to computer engineering problems.

Geeta Pujara
Geeta Pujara has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Wright State. Pujara has served as a teaching and research assistant for two years.

John Rigano
John Rigano has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Department of Microbiology at Immunology at Wright State. Rigano's research has contributed to the field of virology, and will be presented at the prestigious International Retroviruses meeting in Cold Harbor, N.Y.

Alice Teall
Alice Teall has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the Wright State University-Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health. A student in the family nurse practitioner program, Teall is working with a state legislator in conjunction with her thesis research to limit the accessibility of cigarettes to minors.

Nathan Brannon
Nathan Brannon has received the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Award from the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State. A student in the engineering Ph.D. program, Brannon has completed an exhaustive literature review for his dissertation while finishing coursework.
