ENGLISH SKILLS "LEAP" FORWARD
THROUGH WRIGHT STATE PROGRAM
International students may make the leap toward improving their English skills by
enrolling in the Wright LEAP program. LEAP (Learning English for Academic and
Professional Purposes) is a ten-week program offered by Wright State University.
Students learn the language skills necessary for both the academic and
professional worlds. Instruction includes intensive speaking, listening, reading, writing,
grammar, computer communications and composition.
LEAP is a pre-college program for international students. Besides language instruction, LEAP students can also learn about the recreational and cultural opportunities in the area.
"You don't really know a language until you know the culture in which it's spoken," says Richard Johns, director of Intensive English Programs at Wright State. LEAP students have taken field trips to various sites on and off campus, including the Nutter Center, the Creative Arts Center, the Glen Helen Ecology Institute and the Dayton Art Institute.
LEAP students benefit from small classes that use computer technology, e-mail and World Wide Web browsing. They may also audit other WSU courses, and use academic and recreational facilities.
LEAP follows the Wright State University academic calendar. The next course starts Monday, March 30. Students applying for LEAP admission from outside the United States must have a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 400 and provide a copy of the official score report. Students applying for LEAP admission after arriving in the United States are required to take diagnostic tests to determine their readiness for LEAP classes.
Students interested in enrolling in the Summer Quarter program, or anyone interested in learning more about LEAP may attend a reception from 3-5 p.m., on Thursday, April 2, at the University Center for International Education in room E190 of the Wright State Student Union.
