WRIGHT STATE STUDENT WINS NATIONAL
GRADUATE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

Charlene Cape, a 1997 Wright State University M.B.A. student, has won the Graduate Student Leadership Award from the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation. Cape was selected in competition with graduate students nationwide. She will receive the award at the national conference of the Society for Human Resource Management, June 14-17, in Minneapolis, Minn.

To qualify for the award, graduate students must have completed nine hours of graduate level work with at least a 3.25 grade point average. Winners are selected based on their leadership ability, campus and community involvement, commitment to the human resources profession, and grade point average. Cape will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

"Overall, I rate Charlene in the top one percent of all MBA students I have worked with," said Robert F. Scherer, Ph.D., SPHR, professor of management and associate dean for Community Relations at Wright State. "She exhibits a positive attitude in all of her endeavors and is an effective communicator, facilitative leader and goal-oriented individual."

Cape, a native of Edgerton, Ohio, earned her undergraduate degree in psychology with emphases in industrial and organizational psychology. Her M.B.A. program is concentrated in human resources. In addition to being a full-time graduate student, Cape works 30 hours per week as a graduate assistant in Wright State's M.B.A. program. She has managed the human resources certification preparation course conducted by Wright State in conjunction with the Miami Valley Human Resource Association (MVHRA). Cape helped more than 100 professionals prepare for the exam by marketing, coordinating, and directing the workshop. She also helps teach an undergraduate course, "Elements of Management and Supervision."

Cape's community service includes the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, volunteer work at a homeless shelter and nursing home, and volunteer work with the Red Cross. She has belonged to the Management Club and Psychology Club at Wright State.
