February 2, 2000 WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH Stories preserving the centuries-old tradition of African American oral history, and a discussion on the history and role of the black athlete at Wright State University are just two of the events during Wright State’s celebration of Black History Month. The celebration continues through February with drama, storytelling, music, food, films, culture, fashion, dance and discussion. The African American experience will be highlighted during the Black Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 16. Exhibits, vendors and much more will celebrate African American history and culture. The McLin Scholars Association and the Bolinga Cultural Resources Center are sponsoring the event. Tickets are $3 in advance, and $5 at the door. "A Taste of Africa" in the Student Union Atrium on Thursday, Feb. 17, will be devoted to African culture, music, fashion, dance and cuisine. The Union Activities Board and the Bolinga Center sponsor the event. The Black Heritage Ball, the annual semi-formal dinner and casino night sponsored by the Black Student Union, is Friday, Feb. 11, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Former WSU basketball player Abdul Shakur Ahmad of the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam will lead a two-part discussion on "WSU and the Black Athlete," Tuesday, Feb. 8, and Tuesday, Feb. 22. Ahmad will also lead a discussion on "Islam and the African American Experience," Tuesday, Feb. 29. The topic will explore Islam’s philosophy and teachings and the role of blacks in Islam.
