April, May and June 1999

*Wright State Honors Graduate Council Scholars. The School of Graduate Studies at Wright State University has honored five outstanding students as its newest Graduate Council Scholars. Recommended by the faculty and dean of their respective colleges for their academic achievements, the students were awarded stipends and tuition remissions for the 1998-99 academic year. They will continue the program into their upcoming second year of study. (6/30/99)

*Wright State Couple Gets Engaged By "The Rock." The bride-to-be never expected a rock this big. "The Rock," a Wright State University campus landmark traditionally painted by students to tout campus activities and organizations, recently advanced the cause of true love. Matthew Jecker, a financial advisor for American Express, used paints and a brush to ask Jodi Richards, a manager at Burbank's restaurant, to marry him. On Saturday night, June 5, Matt drove Jodi by the rock to see his handiwork, and it was official: they were engaged. (6/29/99)

*Wright State Awards 38 Graduate Student Excellence Awards. Wright State University's School of Graduate Studies has announced the recipients of the 1999 Graduate Student Excellence Awards. Presented to an outstanding student in each university graduate program, the awards recognize the recipients' superior academic achievement, noteworthy thesis work and potential for significant contributions to their fields. Recipients are selected by the faculty in their respective programs. (6/25/99)

*Wright State Professor Honored for Nursing Leadership. Carol Holdcraft, DNS, RN, is this year's recipient of the Leadership Award from the Zeta Phi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. An assistant professor of nursing in Wright State University's College of Nursing and Health, Holdcraft was recognized for her leadership in creating an environment that enhances the image of nursing. *Wright State Professor Appointed Examiner for 1999 Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Joseph A. Petrick, Ph.D., an associate professor of management in Wright State University's College of Business and Administration, has been appointed to the 1999 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award by the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce. *WSU Faculty Member Receives Award for Innovation in Instructional Technology. Bonnie Mathies, Ph.D., associate professor of education and assistant dean for technology and communications in the College of Education and Human Services at Wright State University, recently received a 1999 award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology. The award was presented in Jacksonville, Fla., by the Center for Advancement of Teaching and Learning. (6/15/99)

*Marcia Muller Named Wright State Vice President for Advancement. Marcia G. Muller has been appointed Wright State University's vice president for university advancement, effective July 19. As head of the 40-person division, her responsibilities will include directing the Office of Alumni Relations, Government Relations, Communications and Marketing, and University Development. Muller will also serve as president of the WSU Foundation, Inc. (5/27/99)

*WSU Center For Economic Education Helps K-12 Teachers and Students. Wright State University's Center for Economic Education has been a pioneer in increasing the economic literacy of Ohio's students and adults. Through Internet courses for teachers and programs for students, the Center works to improve economic literacy in 15 Ohio counties. (5/26/99)

*WSU Dean to Participate in Harvard Institute for Higher Education.Patricia Martin, Ph.D., has been accepted to the Harvard Institute for Higher Education Management Development Program. Martin is the interim dean and an associate professor in the Wright State University-Miami Valley College of Nursing and Health. (5/26/99)

*Wright State Theatre Announces Season Change. Ghostly moods and music will fill the Creative Arts Center's Festival Playhouse when the Wright State University Theatre presents "Phantom", which has been slated to replace the previously announced "Rags". (5/20/99)

*WSU's Deborah Vetter to Participate in Byrn Mawr Summer Institute for Women. Deborah Vetter of Wright State University has been selected by Byrn Mawr College to participate in its Summer Institute for Women in Higher Education. Vetter is the director of faculty development operations in the School of Medicine's Office of Faculty and Clinical Affairs. (5/20/99)

*Dr. Howard Part Appointed Dean at Wright State University School of Medicine. Howard M. Part, M.D., has been selected as the fifth dean of Wright State University School of Medicine, effective May 6, 1999. He had served as the medical school's acting dean since April 1998, when he replaced Kim Goldenberg, M.D., who was selected as president of Wright State University. Dr. Part possesses a wealth of experience in advancing community partnerships, is the author of publications and grants in both medical education and research, and has received numerous teaching awards. *Broadway Star to Choregraph WSU's Production of Brigadoon. For more than 50 years, Gemze de Lappe - dancer, actress and choreographer - has been closely associated with legendary choreographer, Agnes de Mille. Born in Portsmouth, Va., de Lappe trained with the Michael Fokine Ballet and danced in Fokine's ballets at the age of 12. and Isadora Duncan School under Irma Duncan. While still a young woman, she became one of the leading members of the Agnes de Mille Dance Theatre Company and was praised by de Mille as one of the finest interpreters of her work. (5/3/99)

*Wright State to Award Honorary Degree to Wright Brothers' Descendant. The Wright State University Board of Trustees will confer the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on G. Wilkinson "Wick" Wright, grand-nephew of Wilbur and Orville Wright and representative for the historic family, at Wright State's commencement ceremony on June 12. (5/3/99)

*Wright State University Joins Internet2 Project. Wright State University has been accepted into Internet2, a high-tech test lab for technologies that will shape the commercial Internet for the 21st century. A collaboration between the top 150 research institutions in the U.S., industry and government, Internet2 gives university researchers a faster, less-crowded alternative to the current model. *Wright State Raises the Roof on Two New Residence Halls. Wright State University will be raising the roof on two new residence halls next week. Construction began last Monday on phase three of College Park apartments. Cranes will be used to construct the new modular three-story apartment buildings, which will go from the ground up in about 10 days. (4/19/99)

*Gray Promoted to Director of Admissions/Alumni Relations. Leona Gray has been appointed director of admissions/alumni relations in the Wright State University School of Professional Psychology. Her responsibilities include the overall leadership and supervision in the development and operation of admissions, recruitment, multicultural relations, student support, counseling and alumni relations. *Mazey Appointed Dean of Wright State's College of Liberal Arts. Mary Ellen Mazey has been appointed dean of Wright State University's College of Liberal Arts. Mazey has been "interim dean" of the college for the past six months. (4/13/99)

*Wright State Twice Honored at 20th Model UN Competition in New York. The Wright State University Model United Nations (NMUN) Team returned from their 20th competition in New York with two Distinguished Delegation awards, placing it among the top ten percent of schools receiving recognition for their performance at NMUN 1999.
