Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

An exhibition of more than 120 Latin American ceremonial and traditional masks from the collection of J. Alberto Delgado is on exhibit in the University Art Galleries, upper gallery, through Oct. 23. Delgado collects masks from eight Hispanic countries as a way to document, preserve and share part of the Hispanic culture. A native of Mexico City, Delgado's interest in masks grew out of an interest in native traditions ‹ especially celebrations and ceremonies. The masks are grouped according to their origins‹indigenous, European or African. They have played an important part in ancient cultures and provide a means to express anger, fear, anxiety and joy.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural and Gender Affairs and the University Art Galleries. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and noon5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 775-2978.
