Traditional Indian dance highlights the 1997 Asia Fest Celebration

By Cindy Young

Experience the exotic cultures of Asia without leaving campus at Wright State University's 1997 Asia Fest Celebration during the month of April. From movies, to food, to dance, to art - there's something for everyone.

Highlighting the month-long celebration will be "Culture Night," a potpourri of Asian cultures featuring "Kanya," a multi-media work by internationally known classical Indian dancer Jothi Raghavan. Raghavan uses classical and modern dance, along with music, poetry and projected images, to explore the idea of women in ancient Indian epics and the contemporary efforts of Indian women to gain equality.

"Kanya," which means woman, uses six traditional poems to tell the story of women in India. The poets will be portrayed by Indian actor Partha Chowdhury. Also on hand will be Natraj, a jazz quintet known for its inventive adaptations of North Indian and West African traditional music, and the Nrityanjali orchestra, an ensemble of musicians from India who perform Carnatic music, the classical music of India that traditionally accompanies the dance.

Culture Night, which runs from 59:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, in WSU's Student Union Multipurpose Room, will also feature ethnic dances from China, the Phillippines, Korea, Lebanon and Pakistan, and a fashion show showcasing the fashions of 13 Asian countries. "Kanya" will start at 8 p.m. Advance admission for Culture Night is $2 for students, $3 for WSU faculty and staff and $5 for the general public. Tickets are available at the Student Union Box Office, 775-5544. Tickets at the door are $6 for everyone.
