WRIGHT STATE ASSSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF PSYCHOLOGY
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society is an interdisciplinary national society of psychologists, engineers, and other professionals who research ways of designing user-friendly systems and devices for work or home.
Colle is currently doing research in three inter-related areas: how short-term memory
works; how people find their way around in a virtual environment; and how hard people are
mentally working.
As chair of WSU's Department of Psychology from 1985 to 1995, Colle developed the university's nationally recognized M.S. and Ph.D. programs in human factors and industrial/organizational psychology, which were approved by the State of Ohio Board of
Regents in 1992.
Previously, Colle won the Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching from the College
of Science and Mathematics in 1996 and the Presidential Award for Excellence in
Professional Service in 1992.

RECEIVES NATIONAL EDUCATORS' AWARD
Herbert A. Colle, Ph.D., has been awarded the 1999 Paul M. Fitts Education Award for
exceptional contributions to the education of human factors and ergonomic specialists from
the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. An associate professor of psychology in Wright
State University's College of Science and Mathematics and a visiting scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Colle was honored at the society's
