Music Scholarships

The Department of Music awards a number of “special scholarships” each academic year.  These scholarships have been funded by a number of donors and patrons.  Criteria and application process varies by scholarship.


Wanda Coalson Piano Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Mr. Michael Coalson and the Department of Music to honor the memory of Michael’s wife Wanda Coalson.

Applications for this scholarship will be made to the Department of Music, which will select the recipient.

Recipients will:

  1. Meet the artistic requirements for admission into the Department of Music
  2. Be in good academic standing
  3. Be piano major

Dayton Chamber Music Society Scholarship

These scholarships are awarded to the first place and second place performers at the annual Department of Music Student Honors Recital.

Students interested in performing on this recital should speak with their Applied Music teacher.

Kim and Shelley Goldenberg Endowed Scholarship for Music

This scholarship was established by Dr. Kim and Mrs. Shelley Goldenberg, the sixth president and first lady of Wright State University.

Recipients will:

  1. Be full time undergraduate students majoring in music
  2. Be in good academic standing, maintaing a grade point average of 2.5

Preference will be given to students with financial need.P

Preference will be given to a student purchasing a new musical instrument

Applications for this scholarship will be made to the Department of Music, which will select the recipient.

Katz Chamber Orchestra Piano Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor Maestro Paul Katz, founder of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and his wife, Mrs. Phyllis Katz, noted piano instructor in Dayton Ohio.

The scholarship recipient will have earned the right to play in the WSU Chamber Orchestra, or be a piano major.

Applications for this scholarship will be made to the Department of Music, which will select the recipient.

Jim McCutcheon Guitar Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Jim McCutcheon and the Department of Music in order to recognize the impact Jim McCutcheon has made on guitar music in the Dayton area and to encourage talented students interested in a music major to matriculate at Wright State.

The scholarship award recipient will:

  1. Be an incoming freshman
  2. Major in guitar
  3. Have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA

Applicants for this scholarship will be selected by the string/piano board from students auditioning on guitar as a major in the Department of Music.

Music Education Award

The Music Education Award is made to an outstanding junior or senior music education major.  The student should show extraordinary commitment to professional preparation by excellence in academic studies and musical competencies.

Nominations for this award will be made by the faculty of the Department of Music who will select the recipient from this list of nominees.

Beverly Orr Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the St. Andrews United Methodist Church to honor Ms. Beverly Orr, long time member of the St Andrews United Methodist Church Choir.

Recipients will:

  1. Meet the artistic requirements for admission into the Department of Music
  2. Be in good academic standing

Preference will be given to

  1. Members of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church of Beavercreek, Ohio
  2. Students who have financial need
  3. A vocal, choral, majo

Applicants for this scholarship should contact their applied voice teacher. Recipient will be selected by the Vocal/Choral Board

Irene Romanowski Piano Award

This scholarship is given to a piano student in honor of Mrs. Irene Romanowski, long time librarian in the music library. 

Nominations for this award will be made by the faculty of the Department of Music who will select the recipient from this list of nominees.

Ralph and Marilyn Smith Award

This scholarship goes to a music major who performs on an orchestral instrument. The student must be an excellent performer who is committed to music as a profession.

Nominations for this award will be made by the faculty of the Department of Music who will select the recipient from this list of nominees.

Charles R Spinney Music Composition Scholarship

This scholarship was donated by WSU Alumni, Mr. Steve Hampton, in honor of his father, Charles Spinney.  The scholarship varies in amount and is awarded to students studying music composition in the Department of Music at WSU.

Students interested in applying should contact Dr. Franklyn Cox, who teaches Music Composition.

Robert Stofer Award

This scholarship is given annually to a junior or senior music student. The Department of Music’s most prestigious award, The Robert Stofer Award, is based  on excellence in music studies, performance abilities and service to the Music Department and the university.

Nominations for this award will be made by the faculty of the Department of Music who will select the recipient from this list of nominees.

Margorie Wilson Woodwind Scholarship

The Margorie Wilson Scholarship was established by Mr. Patrick O’Christie and Mrs. Michele O’Christie to honor Ms. Wilson, Mr. O’Christie’s mother.

The recipient will be a woodwind major in the Department of Music.

Interested students should notify their applied teacher.
