Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) are an award to graduate students in the Department of Music only. It is given to student in return for academic program support under the supervision of a faculty member. GTAs may assist faculty in teaching undergraduate courses and ensembles, or in providing other appropriate academic service and administrative tasks.
How to apply for a GTA
- Students must apply to the School of Graduate Studies for admission.
- Submit the Graduate Teaching Assistantship application (download from the Department of Music website), and submit to the Department of Music prior to March 1.
- GTA applicants must submit three letters of professional recommendation.
What a GTA covers
- Tuition for graduate classes up to twelve (12) hours per semester during the regular school year (Fall and Spring).
- Following the first year, students may opt for summer tuition
- GTAs are for one-year, renewable for a second year.
- A stipend (currently $7,500 per year).
- Health care may be obtained from WSU at additional cost to the student.
- Other related fees, such as applied lesson fees and parking are not covered.
What is required of the graduate student
- Students must enroll for a minimum of six (6) graduate hours in music per regular semester.
- Fulfil assignments given by faculty supervisor, approximatedly 20 hours a week.
