Degrees in Music

Undergraduate

The Bachelor of Music degree is offered to students with majors in performance, music education, and music history and literature. Each student must consult with an advisor in planning a program. See the Undergraduate Catalog for details.

The Bachelor of Arts degree is intended for students who may desire a more general education, but with an emphasis in music. This degree program allows more flexibility in selection of courses than does the Bachelor of Music degree. The requirements are shown in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Music Honors Program

The Music Honors Program was designed for students who have demonstrated the ability to do superior work both academically and musically. Eligibility to enter the program is dependent upon your current standing in the applied music major or concentration (i.e., Categories III/IIIA or IV/IVA), your grade point average (3.0 GPA overall, 3.5 GPA in all music courses), and permission of an Honors Project Director. If you are interested in attaining a Bachelor of Music Degree with Honors in Music, you are encouraged to discuss your ideas with Dr. Larkowski. A complete description of eligibility for the Department of Music Honors Program is available in the Music Office.

Graduate

The Master of Music in Music Education degree is designed for teachers in the public schools, or for those who may wish to teach in junior colleges or in four-year colleges. This program provides preparation for students for whom the master's degree is a terminal program, as well as for students who may wish to study at the doctoral level. Upon admission to the graduate program, the student may plan study around one of three major options: (1) Thesis Option, (2) Recital Option, or (3) Project Option. See Master of Music in Music Education degree program, University Graduate Catalog.

The Master of Music in Performance is a degree program designed to prepare graduates for professional careers as performing musicians and/or those who seek to pursue further study in music at the doctoral level. Areas of study include solo performance in the instrumental or vocal areas, and either instrumental or choral conducting. Each program of study includes requirements in music history, music research, and music theory, plus intensive study in the designated applied area. The required thesis comprises a public performance recital of approximately one hour's length, with an accompanying scholarly research document related to the recital. Requirements also include a one-year residency of three consecutive quarters of full-time enrollment, beginning in the Fall quarter (i.e., Fall-Winter-Spring quarters), and an oral comprehensive examination at the completion of the program.

The Master of Humanities (Emphasis in Music) is a flexible degree curriculum designed to serve the needs of the student interested in a career as a professional musician in a variety of areas including conducting, solo performance, musicology, theory, composition, and others. Courses are equally valuable for students who plan to study at the doctoral level. A variety of program options allows students to design programs that suit their professional goals and take into account their backgrounds and experience. Several written and creative thesis options are available to the student.
