Ryan Tarjanyi, faculty associate, serves as the conductor of the Wright State University Jazz Ensemble and Pep Band, and teaches Jazz Listening, Music Appreciation and Jazz Improvisation. He holds a M.M. from Indiana University and a B.M. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (both Jazz Studies/Trumpet). While at IU, Ryan held the position of Associate Instructor of Jazz Studies under Distinguished Professor David N. Baker. Ryan’s primary trumpet teachers were Pat Harbison, Joey Tartell, Armando Ghitalla, Marie Speziale, Edwin Betts and the legendary William Adam.

Ryan has performed freelance throughout the United States, including extensive work in South Florida, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Toledo/Detroit, and South Central Indiana. In Dayton, Ohio, Ryan performs regularly as a trumpeter leading his own jazz quartet, performing as a side man, and in many area big bands. Some of Ryan’s other notable performing experience includes work with such artists and groups as: Tony Bennett, John Von Ohlen’s Blue Wisp Big Band, Matt Harris, Slide Hampton, David Baker, Steve Houghton, Dayton Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Tim Hagans, Toledo Jazz Orchestra, Gloria Estefan, Cincinnati Concert Orchestra, and fiddler Billy Armstong.

In addition to his teaching duties at Wright State, Ryan is in demand throughout the Miami Valley as a private lesson teacher and clinician. He also serves regularly on the Jazz faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Ryan resides in Dayton with his wife Mary, a Clarinetist with the Air Force Band of Flight at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, their son Owen, and two cats.
