The Wright State University Double Reed Festival is an event that brings together double reed players from throughout Southwestern and Central Ohio. The conference is a full day of new ideas and exchanges of knowledge geared towards the needs and interests of high school students, private studio teachers, and amateur double reed players. The day will include:

  • Classes covering concepts of performing, reed adjustment, the English horn and contrabassoon, and literature with separate offerings for students and adults.
  • The WSU Double Reed Festival is for high school and college students, amateur and professional players, and private studio teachers
  • Cost of the event is $30 This covers all masterclasses, recitals, and events of the day.
  • Everyone should bring an instrument and participate in the clinics and workshops.
  • All festival events will take place on the campus of Wright State University at the Creative Arts Center.

Bill Jobert
  Bill Jobert is the bassoon instructor at Wright State University.  He and Dan Duncan will team up for a performance masterclass on OMEA solos. Bill Jobert's Homepage
     
Katherine deGruchy
  Katherine L. deGruchy is the oboe instructor at Wright State University and will be presenting beginning and advanced masterclasses on the English horn. Katherine deGruchy's Homepage
     
Matthew Karr
 

Matthew Karr has been the Principal Bassoonist of the Louisville Orchestra since 1979. Matthew received his B.M degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (1978), receiving honors as Best
Orchestral Performer of his graduating class, and induction into Phi Kappa Lambda, (Honor Society for graduating seniors). Upon graduation, Matthew spent a year in Chicago as Co-Principal bassoon of the Chicago Civic Orchestra (training Orchestra for the Chicago Symphony). In April of 1979, Matthew won the Principal Bassoon job with the Louisville Orchestra.

Matthew spent a year at S.U.N.Y. at Stonybrook (New York) and earned his M.M. degree while on leave from the L.O. in 1982-83. Matthew has performed as Associate Principal Bassoon with
the Houston Symphony during the 2000-2001 Season, and been an active Chamber musician. His credits include Kentucky Center Chamber Players, Marlboro Music Festival, Tanglewood Festival,
Ronen Ensemble, Suzuki and Friends, Music Academy of the West and Interlochen Arts Camp. Matthew is very proud of the many works that he Premiered in the United States, including Michael
Daugherty's "Hells Angels" and Simon Bainbridge's "Ad Ora Incerta".  Matthew made a compact disc, in 1997, "A Bassoonists Voice" on the Centaur label,  that is in its third pressing.

Matthew's other passion is building fine custom furniture. He began this as a hobby in 1993, and has developed many of his own designs that have been featured in several local newspapers including the Louisville Courier Journal. Other activities include climbing 14,000 foot mountains in the Sierras of California, riding his Trek 5000 bicycle all over Oldham County and spending time with his children, Laura and Daniel. Matthew is married to Principal flutist Kathleen Karr.

John deGruchy is a native of Long Island, N.Y., where he began studying the bassoon at age 15. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied under Cleveland Orchestra principal bassoonist George Goslee. He has also earned a Masters of Music from Rice University, studying under the tutelage of Benjamin Kamins.

John served as Second Bassoon in the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra from 1988-1996. He has also performed extensively throughout southwest Ohio and the Midwest, including stints with the Cincinnati Opera and Ballet, The Louisville Symphony, The West Virginia Symphony, and the Whitewater Opera Company. He has also participated in the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute.

Most recently, John has performed as principal bassoon with the Springfield Symphony in 2003 and 2004, the Middletown Symphony 2006 and 2007, and also the Hamilton – Fairfield Symphony 2007-2009. He also has performed at the Hamilton Fairfield Chamber Series and the Dayton Art Institute Sunday Chamber Music series in 2010. He and his wife Katherine founded the Burning River Winds in 2006.

     
Carlos Ceolho
  Carlos Coelho is an oboe repair specialist and owner of Carlos Coelho Woodwinds. Born in Brazil, he studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at Temple University. His masterclass will be on selecting the right instrument. Coelho Woodwinds will have a booth in the vendor hall so oboists can purchase supplies and speak to Carlos throughout the day.

  Bruce Gbur is the former professor of bassoon and oboe at Kansas State University holding degrees in bassoon performance and musicology from Baldwin-Wallace and the University of Georgia.  He is an accomplished contrabassoonist and is the founder and owner of the double reed publishing house Prairie Dawg Press. Prairie Dawg Press Homepage He is also currently the head of editing and publishing at Bocal Press.
     
Adam De Sorgo
 

Adam De Sorgo is the Principal Oboe of the Sarasota Orchestra, a member of the Sarasota Wind Quintet, and Principal Oboe of the Utah Festival Opera.Mr. De Sorgo was recently featured as a soloist with the Sarasota Orchestra, playing the “La Favorita” Variations by Pasculli. Mr. De Sorgo was a fellow in the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas and featured as a guest Principal Oboist with the Rochester Philharmonic and the Baltimore Symphony. He has also been a pianist and accompanist for the Cleveland State University Choruses, the Canton Symphony Chorus, and the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.

     
Dan Duncan   Dr. Dan Duncan retired in 2005 after over 40 years of teaching double reed instruments at universities in Kansas, Texas, Indiana, and Kentucky.  He studied with Wilbur Simpson at Northwestern University, Howard Halgedahl at Wichita University, and Leonard Sharrow at Indiana University among others.  In the spring of 2002 he engaged in post doctoral study at the Early Music Institute of Indiana University with Eva Legene, Wendy Gillespie, Washington McClain, and Michael McCraw.   Orchestras he has performed with include the Louisville Orchestra (bassoon and contra bassoon), the Lexington Philharmonic (bassoon and saxophone), and the Corpus Christi Symphony (bassoon, contra bassoon, oboe, English horn, recorder, and saxophone).  He is currently principal bassoon with the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra and performs with “Wind in the Woods” early music ensemble.
     
Christin Schillinger
 

Dr. Christin Schillinger is the Assistant Professor of Bassoon at Miami University, Ohio.  She held the same position with the University of Nevada from 2004-2009. Schillinger specializes in the accessibility of the avant-garde. Often pairing the neo-romantic with the post-tonal multi-phonic, she teaches from the concert stage and aims to broaden the audience for both new music and bassoon. Bassoon Surrounded, her 2009 CD released on the MSR Classics label, features works for bassoon and percussion. The CD includes five world premiere recordings and received critical acclaim from both Fanfare and American Record Guide Magazines.
Schillinger is active as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician throughout the United States and Europe. She has recently performed at the University of Texas, the University of Michigan, Arizona State University, and the University of North Texas. Together with colleague Andrea Ridilla, she will co-host the 2012 International Double Reed Society Conference on the campus of Miami University.

Schillinger received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University, Master of Music from Michigan State University, and Bachelor of Music in performance and music theory from Northwestern University. Her primary teachers include Dr. Jeffrey Lyman, Albie Micklich, Barrick Stees, Michael Kroth, and Robert Barris.

College/Adult Bassoon Performance Clinics

These clinics are designed specifically for the college or adult bassoonists looking for opportunities to work with guest artists and to network with other bassoonists. To participate in these clinics be sure to fill out the registration form and indicate that you would like to perform in the masterclasses.  The Classes will include:
