Basson Studio
The bassoon studio at Wright State Studio is under the direction of Bill Jobert. Jobert has both a music education degree from the University of Georgia and a performance degree from the Eastman School of Music and has experiences in both areas of the music profession. The emphasis in the studio is both the performance of the instrument and the pedagogical teaching of the instrument.
This year there are 6 bassoon majors and one bassoon minor. Each quarter they are divided into two weekly masteclass/ensemble groups. In the fall quarter the groups are the freshman and the returning majors. The freshmen focus on learning to make bassoon reeds while the returning bassoonists focus on improving their reed making skills, using the profiler and dial indicator, and mapping their reed measurements. At the end of the quarter the studio hosts reed making classes for area high school students so the WSU students can use their skills and knowledge as teachers. In the winter quarter the bassoon studio helps host the Wright State Double Reed Festival (http://www.wright.edu/music/double-reed/). For both the winter and spring quarters the bassoonists are re-divided for their masterclass groups, this time by playing ability. The lower ensemble group focuses on tone production and intonation while working on bassoon ensembles and mock juries. The upper ensemble groups focuses on more difficult bassoon ensemble literature in preparation for playing at schools in the spring quarter and on orchestral excerpt studies. Both groups perform on student recitals and on the Bassoon night in the spring quarter.
The bassoonists in the Wright State studio perform frequently with great emphasis being placed on not only the quality of the performance, but the quality of the preparation to perform. Whether students are performance majors or education majors, they will always be performing and it is important that they learn how to be successful through their studies on the bassoon.
