The Wright State University Symphonic Band and Concert Band are both performing wind bands open to all WSU students from a wide variety of fields of study within the university.  The bands rehearse on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 - 3:20 pm in Room M152 and M162 in the Creative Arts Center. Each band performs at minimum one concert each semester with musical repertory ranging from pop concerts to wind band classics and contemporary compositions. In addition, a one-day off-campus tour performance is often organized at a high school within the greater Dayton area. All members interested in joining Symphonic Band (Concert Band Section 01) must complete a band placement audition during the first week of class in order to determine appropriate placement in either Symphonic Band (section 01) or Concert Band (section 02).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

How do I register for Band?
If you have recently performed in a quality high school band program, then you are probably more appropriate for placement in Symphonic Band (Section 01), which has a short audition requirement.
If you are just recently learning an instrument or have not played your instrument for several years, then you should register for Concert Band (Section 02), which has NO audition requirement.

How do I prepare for my audition for Symphonic Band?
If you are a non-music major, then download the audition music here and prepare it as best as you can for the first week of class. Auditions will be held on the first Tuesday and Thursday during regular course time 2:00 - 3:20 PM in Room M162. If you are a music major, then download the music found on the Band Auditions page for music majors, and watch for an email or postings at school to sign up for your audition time. Thus, music majors only have to audition ONCE by this method; your audition for Wind Symphony will also serve as your audition for Symphonic Band / Concert Band if you want to perform in both groups. Please designate your indication to perform in both groups on your Band Audition form at your audition time.

Flute/Piccolo Horn Saxophone Tuba

I have another WSU class that does not end until 2:00 PM. Can I still play in the bands even though rehearsals begin at 2:00 PM?
YES. If you have a class until 2:00 PM, please ask your advisor to still register you for band. Many students have class until 2:00 PM and simply arrive a little late and enter rehearsals quietly. Your grade is not affected by late arrival from another class.

I don’t own my own instrument.
No problem. If you need an instrument in order to perform in one of the bands, you simply need to contact the director of the ensemble and they will help you in acquiring an instrument. There is no rental fee for WSU students using instruments in a WSU ensemble.

I joined Concert Band (Section 02) but I find it too easy and not challenging enough for my level of playing. Can I switch to Symphonic Band (Section 01) instead?
YES. At any time you feel your playing skills are more appropriate for the other band, simply talk to your band director and they will help you transition to the other band.
