¡La Fiesta! Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off

Wright State faculty, staff, and students experienced Latino muisc, salsa and merengue lessons by DJ Gomez, cultural booths hosted by the Spanish Club, arts and crafts, games, and vendors.

Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture: “Gender Differences in Self-Efficacy Among Latino College Freshmen”

Dr. J. Derek Lopez, Professor of Psychology and Director, Center of Academic Enrichment, at Colorado State University-Pueblo, spoke about examining the changes in self-efficacy among Latinos during the freshman year in a highly selective institution. Results indicate that gender differences exist during this period. Males rate themselves high is self-efficacy at the beginning of the year, while females rate themselves low. An interaction effect occurs at the end of the year, and the ratings of self-efficacy are similar for both males and females.


Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture: “Mexican Hometown Associations: The Changing Face of Philanthropy”

Dr. Xochitl Bada, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Illinois at Chicago, discussed how the face of international, cross-border philanthropy and volunteering is changing. The Mexican Hometown Associations (MHTAs) are grass-roots communities in the U.S. who band together to send monies to their foreign hometowns for community and economic development. These associations have formed to respond to a need that has failed to be met by or is not effectively met by the government.


Hispanic Heritage Month Event: Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Altar Making

Wright State faculty, students and staff learned about the different aspects of Día de los Muertos, a day of celebration for people of Latin America, in particular, Mexico and Central America, in honoring the dead and the cycle of life and death. They decorated paper mache skull masks that were on display on the altar located in the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center.


Hispanic Heritage Month Event: Fiesta Night

Wright State faculty, students and staff ended the month long celebration by participating in it's salsa tasiting, painting maracas, making paper flowers, dancing and much more! Live entertainment was provided by DJ Gomez.
