Upward Bound is a precollege program that is designed to provide academic skills for students from first-generation college and low-income families who are interested in pursuing an educational program beyond high school.

Program Details

Upward Bound provides students the opportunity to strengthen the fundamental learning skills that are necessary to complete high school, enroll in and graduate from college. The program emphasizes reading, writing, math, science and study skills. Courses are taught by instructors whose primary concern is the student. Personal, career, and academic advising is also provided.

  • During the school year (September–May), students are in contact with Upward Bound staff, teachers through tutoring, career workshops, academic advising, school visits, cultural activities, and educational field trips.
  • During the summer (June/July), Upward Bound students live on the campus of Wright State University for a six-weeks residential academy and participate in a variety of academic, social, and cultural activities.

The Wright State Upward Bound Program is funded through the U.S. Department of Education. All program services and activities are free of charge for eligible Upward Bound participants.

Who is eligible?

  • Students who reside in and attend Dayton Public Schools.
  • Students who are in the 9th or 10th grade.
  • Students from first-generation college and/or low-income families.

Parent Advisory Group

Parents/guardians of Upward Bound participants are expected to support the program by encouraging their child to participate in all activities, to attend school regularly, to study at home, and to seek enrollment in a post secondary educational program. Parents/Guardians that participate in the Parent Advisory Group share a common goal of promoting communication among the parents, students and staff in order to support a positive educational environment for all Upward Bound participants.
