The Division of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement works to transform the lives of our students and the communities we serve by promoting intergroup understanding, equity, social responsibility, and service while working to prevent discrimination. Our work helps to ensure access so that all who can contribute to and benefit from a relationship with Wright State University are welcomed.


The vision of the Division of Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement is to institutionalize inclusion so that:

  1. students leave the university with the ability to participate in our democratic society as informed, compassionate, and engaged citizens;
  2. members of the campus community are motivated to solve the social problems we share with the greater Dayton area, other municipalities in Raider Country, and the world; and
  3. everyone who is touched by Wright State University is in some way empowered to reach their unique potential.



Honoring our University’s and Nation’s ongoing aspiration to create a sense of community among the many groups that make up our diverse democracy as well as the tradition of shared governance in higher education, we welcome many voices to our conversations, particularly those who have been underrepresented or disenfranchised.

1.    Provide educational programming, professional development opportunities and consultation to promote understanding among various cultural/identity groups and individuals on campus as well as in the communities we serve.

2.    Provide job specific diversity related training to university employees.

3.    Develop strategies to promote equitable treatment of members of the campus community and to prevent unlawful discrimination.

4.    Encourage engaged citizenship on the part of students, faculty and staff through community partnerships, service, social entrepreneurism, political action and activism.

5.    Assist in the recruitment of a diverse student body, faculty and staff.

6.    Facilitate the creation of a welcoming and inclusive campus climate to assist in the retention of a diverse student body, faculty and staff.   

7.    Develop strategies to eliminate the academic achievement gap among WSU student groups.  


Dr. Kimberly A. Barrett

Dr. Kimberly Barrett serves as Vice President for Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement at Wright State University. Barrett has more than 25 years of experience working with faculty, students, governing boards, community members and others to promote learning, student development, social justice and diversity. In her position at Wright State, Dr. Barrett takes a hands-on role in continuing to promote diversity, multiculturalism, inclusion and community engagement.

Prior to joining Wright State, Barrett served as Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Montevallo (Alabama). She served as the Chief Student Affairs Officer, providing services in support of student learning and personal development. These services included supervising housing and residence life, disability support, multicultural affairs and other student life offices. Barrett has also held other administrative positions in higher education in the U.S. and Canada, including Vice Provost, graduate program coordinator, and Dean of Students, among others. She was also the founding director of the Women’s Center at Murray State University in Kentucky.

Barrett has been active in a variety of community organizations in a number of states whose goals relate to achieving social and economic justice, including a group in Alabama that started a Mental Health Court diversion program for Shelby County. Some of her civic activities locally include being a member of the Dayton Rotary, Welcome Dayton, 100+ Women Who Care, the leadership council for the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Minority Business Partnership, and serving as the 2014 Women's Leadership Chair for the United Way of Greater Dayton.

Since 1992, Barrett has served as a diversity consultant, providing sensitivity programming for schools, businesses and community groups on prejudice reduction, cultural competence, sexual harassment, homophobia and other diversity related areas.

Barrett has made numerous presentations at regional, national and international conferences, discussing topics such as Diversity Education and the Public Good and Ten Years of Breaking Glass: A Black Feminist Reflects on Equity in Higher Education. She has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels and has published articles in professional academic journals and newspapers.

Barrett obtained her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Murray State University, and her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, North Carolina.

Dr. Tamera R. Schneider

Tamera R. Schneider, Ph.D., currently serves as Assistant Vice President of Multicultural Affairs & Community Engagement at Wright State University, where she focuses on empowering individuals, encouraging inclusiveness, and inspiring excellence. She also serves as a professor in the Department of Psychology, where her Social/Health Psychophysiology laboratory maintains two research programs. One focuses on psychological and physiological stress resilience and performance, while the other focuses on persuading health, well-being, and hospitable workplace behaviors. As Co-PI of the LEADER Consortium, she developed and directs the social science research aimed at fostering a welcoming STEM workplace. Her bio behavioral model of persuasion was key for implementing diversity training and persuasion research.

Dr. Schneider has over 40 publications and 100 presentations. She has secured almost $500,000 as Principal Investigator and $4 million as Co-Principal Investigator. Her research collaborations are often conducted across disciplines, such as combining her stress and emotion psychophysiological expertise to investigate remote sensing capabilities, and applying the bio behavioral model of persuasion to promote cancer screening in applied settings.

In 1997 Tamera received her Ph.D. in Social and Health Psychology with a focus in psychophysiology, and a minor in Statistics, from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She became a postdoctoral fellow then research associate in the Health, Emotion, and Behavior Laboratory at Yale University, where she continues to collaborate.  Across her career she has received numerous research and teaching awards, including the Presidential Award for Faculty Excellence in Early Career Achievement in 2004 and the SOCHE Award for Faculty Excellence in Teaching, 2005. Dr. Schneider is very pleased to expand her emphasis working with the Division of Multicultural Affairs to support inclusive excellence at Wright State University and the region.

Ms. Patricia D. Jones

Assistant to the Vice President,
Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement

Patricia D. Jones currently serves as the Assistant to the Vice President for Multicultural Affairs and Community Engagement at Wright State University. With more than 10 years of experience in providing services to underrepresented students, both at the pre-college and collegiate level, Ms. Jones is passionate about ensuring that all students receive an excellent education and is considered an advocate for students.

Ms. Jones is a graduate of Wright State University, where she obtained her masters degree in Public Administration after earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University. She is a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, an academic honor society for public affairs and administration. She is a certified Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute trainer and a graduate of the City of Dayton's Neighborhood Leadership Institute.

Over the course of her 12 years at Wright State, Ms. Jones worked in the Center for Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA), where she directed the Summerbridge Dayton program for eight years, then transitioned the program to the Office of Pre-College Programs.  Ms. Jones also served as the Southwest Regional Site Manager for the Ohio Certified Public Manager Program; a certification program for local and state managers and supervisors, administered through the Ohio Department of Administrative Services. She was instrumental in planning and implementing the Association for Black Culture Centers 21st annual national conference, hosted by Wright State University and the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center. Ms. Jones also coordinated the Vision Mentoring Program, which paired first-year students with upper class students to help them with the transition from high school to college.

Ms. Jones serves on the Diversity in the Multicultural Millennium Conference planning committee, is currently president emeritus of Wright State University’s African American Alumni Society, and a board member for Wright State's Alumni Association.
