Urban Affairs
Major
The study of urban affairs deals with cities and urban life within local, regional, national, and global contexts. Urban affairs is based on the premise that the urban environment must be studied and analyzed as a total system. Employment for graduates with a degree in urban affairs may be found in: community development; judicial and police agencies; zoning, land use, and code enforcement; and economic development.
- Three areas of concentration are offered in urban affairs: community development, urban management administration, and urban physical and social planning.
- A Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in urban affairs is available. The Bachelor of Arts degree includes study in a foreign language and in research methods. The Bachelor of Science degree includes courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science.
- The Center for Urban and Public Affairs at Wright State is a regional leader in conducting urban research. Research teams of faculty, staff, and students collaborate to study various topics including: solid waste management, housing and land use development; tax abatement use and policy; and ground water policy.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the following careers will have a significant increase in demand from 1998 to 2008: teachers (secondary education), social workers, corrections officers, social and human services assistants, writers/editors, technical writers, commercial artists, public relations specialists, desktop publishing specialists, and urban and regional planners.
Average starting salaries for professionals with bachelor's degree in liberal arts related fields: criminal justice/corrections $28,282; social work $21,682; history $31,359; public relations $29,357; writing/editing $32,013; journalism $28,223; visual and performing arts $29,331; and urban and regional planning $31,745.
