Organizational Leadership

Welcome to Organizational Leadership at the Lake Campus!

Wright State University is pleased to offer the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership (OL) at the Lake Campus located in Celina, Ohio. The OL degree is a bachelor's degree completion program that is designed for individuals who have completed an associate degree (or its equivalent - 90 quarter credit hours). This bachelor's degree was developed to meet the requirements of area business leaders who expressed a need for individuals to work in their organizations who had a broad-based background in leadership, management, communication, and computer skills. As such, this multi-disciplinary program was developed.

Transferring Credits into the Program

Many, but not all of the students who are in the OL degree program at the Lake Campus are working full time and taking classes part time. They typically do not start the program until they have earned a total of 125 credit hours. Therefore, upon entering this program, students generally would have met the general education requirements that are required of each student graduating from the university. In addition, since students typically have an associate degree, they would have met the 70 quarter credit hours of electives. Students who have credits that are not applicable to specific degree requirements benefit from having those credits applied to this elective credit requirement. Those students who will be attending the program full time, usually have earned approximately 90 credit hours and can usually complete the program in two years of full-time study.

Courses Specific to Organizational Leadership

Prior to starting into the actually degree itself, students must complete pre-requisite courses in accounting, marketing, finance, statistics, or economics. Students then begin with the required foundation courses that include professional skills in organizational leadership, contemporary issues in leadership, organizational assessment, and developing and presenting effective training. Fundamental courses include an introduction to organizational behavior course, which serves as a foundation to selected upper-division management, law, and urban studies courses. Related courses requirements—the integrated leadership focus—include either a business, research or technical writing course, a computer literacy course, a foundations course in communication that covers public speaking, and one additional communication course. Finally one course is chosen from a selected upper division philosophy, psychology, sociology, urban affairs, or women's studies.

The Capstone Experience

The culmination of the degree program is a two course sequence where students prepare for the world of work through a course entitled, Professional Development Seminar and a second course titled Leadership in Practice: The Capstone. It is through this capstone course that students cull all of the business problem solving skills learned throughout their program and apply those skills to an organizational issue of their choosing. Students either work alone or in teams, solving organizational problems at one of their workplaces, or on occasion, a community-based issue that needs assistance.

The Cohort Model

The Organizational Leadership program at the Lake Campus is based on a cohort model. The program begins with a new group of juniors each fall, and the students move through the program together taking the same required courses for each of the next seven quarters. The program is structured so that only two required classes are scheduled each quarter for five of the seven quarters, and only one course is required each of two other quarters. Students attend the summer between the junior and senior year. Currently, every other year, we alternate between a Tuesday and Thursday evening group, which meets during the traditional quarter; and a Friday night and Saturday, all day, which meets only five weekends per term. (See the Sample Two-Year Curriculum Plan link for the program layout.)

Students are encouraged to contact the program coordinator as soon as possible to ensure that appropriate course selection is made and that a space is secured in the program.
