El Jefe Updates: Bill Holmes

As winter comes to a close, we are already looking into the future with many plans for a successful future of international education at Wright State.  I have been working closely with a committee to develop the future international recruitment plan for international enrollment to start in July 2018.  Many of our first steps have been to review what we have been doing to date and what can do in the future to diversify our markets, increase our in-country presence abroad, and become more active in our recruitment strategies.  In the interim, we have also been engaged in outreach abroad such as efforts in India, Nepal, China, and other markets in Central Asia.  Although we have seen a slight increase in international applications since fall last year, we know that this is a very competitive market and we will need to do more moving forward.  This is why your input matters.  I urge you to come meet with me or attend one of my open forums to make sure all ideas are considered.  Upcoming dates are as follows:
  • Tuesday, February 27th, 9am-10am
  • Wednesday, March 14th, 3pm-4pm
  • Thursday, March 29th, 11am-noon
  • Friday, April 13th, 10:30-11:30am
Our Wright State International Festival is just a month away.  This year, we have refocused the Festival on our students.  The event will be held in the Student Union Apollo Room on March 24th from 4pm-8pm and will highlight the many traditions of our approximately 1,000 international students.  We understand that March is a busy month for all of us and we are pleased to support our international students and the many contributions they bring to our campus.  In its 34th year, the International Festival is an important opportunity for us to celebrate our international students, share in their culture and traditions, and show them our support.  Attendees can celebrate the beauty of our international community with:
  • Cultural Cuisines
  • International Beers
  • Cultural Performances
  • Live Music
  • Children's Zone
  • Flag Parade
  • Country Displays
  • And so much more!
Enjoy your spring break!

Highlighting Collaborations: Ice Skating with Over 80 WSU Students

On Saturday, February 10th, the University Center for International Education collaborated with UpDayton, International Friendship Inc. and International Cultural Exchange to expose students to our downtown ice skating rink at Riverscape MetroPark. The turnout was incredible with over 80 WSU students in attendance. With the event coinciding with the time frame of the 2018 Winter Olympics, students were able to enjoy 3 hours of ice skating while also interacting with community member and ice skating instructor, Lesli Nachauer, to learn the history of figure skating. Students Abroad Highlight: Thanh Dang

"The Japan Ambassador Program reaffirmed what I want to do with my life. I decided earlier in college that I would like to teach English in a foreign country, but I didn't know what country because I had never been to one. Now, I am getting ready to do an English internship in Japan next semester and I am more confident than ever that teaching is the right choice for me. The amount of experiences you are able to have in such a small window of time (during the Japanese Ambassador Program) is absolutely incredible and I can't think of a better way to go to Japan for the first time," said Thanh.
