tax-season-2016.jpg9) Attention International Students: Tax Season is here!!!

Tax Facts

Even if you were in the U.S. only one day in 2015(and despite the fact you may not have earned any income during 2015), according to the Federal Laws, you must file your Tax Returns which will be the IRS Form 8843.

Glacier Tax Prep (GTP)

UCIE will be conducting several Tax Seminars for International students.

This is a web-based tax return preparation system designed exclusively for foreign students, scholars, teachers, researchers, trainees, and their dependents who are non-resident aliens to aid in preparing U.S. federal income tax Forms 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ.

You will come to know about the workshop schedule on the UCIE webpage and in this newsletter in the coming weeks. We will be conducting two (2) workshops every week so that most of the students can file their returns via UCIE workshops.

In the upcoming week we will be selling passcodes through UCIE Marketplace allowing access to the online software and related workshops.

Please review the Newsletters regarding TAX FACTS every week.

Why File Form 8843

Filing Form 8843 does not mean you owe the government money but rather to explain the basis of your claim that you can exclude days of presence in the United States for purposes of the substantial presence test. If you didn't work last year, this will be the only form for you to file and it is a very simple form due by June 15, 2016. If you do not file Form 8843 on time, you could be considered a U.S. resident under the substantial presence test and this is one of the penalties. You do not need social security number or individual taxpayer identification number to file this form.

Note:  If you made any income in 2015, you will need to file Form 8843 along with 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ by April 15, 2014

What if Form 8843 is not filed?

There is no monetary penalty for not filling Form 8843.  However, days of presence cannot be excluded from the substantial presence test unless Form 8843 is filed.

Please be aware that each student/scholar is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of his/her income tax returns and any resulting penalties or interest.
