Feature Alum: Durado Brooks
1982 M.D.
Physician, Dallas, Texas
"Working in public health, my patients number
into the millions."
Based in Dallas, Texas, Durado Brooks travels the country to talk about two topics many would like to avoid. The director of the American Cancer
Society's Prostate and Colorectal Programs, Brooks is on a mission: to spread the word about healthy lifestyle choices and early screenings to
combat two diseases that strike 300,000 Americans a year. After all, he says, it's about saving one life at a time.
"Starting with my first quarter of medical school at Wright State, the focus was on the patient, and the fact that when we graduated, we
would be taking care of the whole person, not just body parts," Brooks says. "That shaped the way I practice medicine, the way I approach
my work in public health medicine today."
Best Advice:
"Ask forgiveness, not permission."
Favorite Quote:
"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence."
The Desiderata
Future Plans: Continue to work with American Cancer Society. Anything else I pursue will still be in the vein
of public health and
community health.
