"My patients are like family."
And just like a concerned parent, Dayton dermatologist Samia Borchers
wants to ensure that her young patients-and their peers-know the dangers
of tanning booths and unprotected exposure to the sun. She developed
RAYS (Raising Awareness About Your Skin), the nation's first skin cancer
education program that takes the message into the schools. For this
work, she was named Outstanding Dermatologist of the Year by the Ohio
Dermatologic Association in 2001. Recently, she developed a cancer awareness
poster that will be used in doctors' offices throughout Ohio.
"Because Wright State's medical school is community based, I have
a lot of community contacts. That's helped get my message into the schools
and community, and I think save lives."
