Feature Alum: Bill Richey

1984 B.S., 1986 M.Ed.
Teacher, Xenia High School, Xenia, Ohio

"I'm in the perfect profession."

Elephant toothpaste, a vacuum in a bottle, dry ice showers. Xenia High School teacher Bill Richey thinks "outside the box" to demonstrate the fun and wonder of science. His innovative teaching style has earned him numerous teaching awards, including the 1998 Ohio Teacher of the Year and the 1999 Milken National Educator Award. But the one he holds most dear is being named by Xenia's valedictorians as their most influential teacher 10 times during his 16-year teaching career.

"At Wright State, I received a strong foundation in the sciences," he says. "I had great professors. They were personable and used humor; they didn't stand up there and just lecture. They lit the fire for me to be a teacher."

Favorite WSU Memory: Being a teaching assistant when I was a graduate student. That's what made me decide that I really wanted to be a teacher.

Best Advice: From my father... "There are no failures, just learn from your mistakes and move on."

Favorite Quote: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." William Butler Yeats
