Feature Alum: James Mountz
1969 B.S.
Researcher, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Ala.
"We're learning more about how to treat strokes,
Alzheimer's, and other brain diseases."
Brain imaging research by James Mountz, M.D., Ph.D., is helping strokes victims use their brain's natural ability to recover from the damage caused by stroke. His research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham may also find help for autistic and learning disabled children, alcohol and drug addicts, and those suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorders or Alzheimer's disease.
While studying physics at Wright State University, Mountz says the faculty inspired him "to learn and to continue to learn. They inspired a desire to learn that's still in me today." He formed both a personal and intellectual bond with his professors and his fellow students. "They made us feel we could achieve in any field."
