Feature Alum: Dave Long
1978 M.Ed.
Executive Director, Nova House, Dayton, Ohio
"I'm an example of a person who had doors opened for me."
While getting some additional teacher training at Wright State University, professors encouraged Dave Long to pursue a master's degree in counseling.
Once in the program, Long reviewed thousands of hours of counseling tapes, in order to learn the most he could. "Wright State encouraged me, challenged
me, and pushed me," he says. "The graduate school process changed my life."
Long now helps others as executive director of Nova House, a 130-bed residential substance abuse treatment agency with two campuses in Dayton.
Most clients are uninsured, underinsured, or indigent with drug abuse, mental illness, postpartum depression, or other problems. "Nova House
serves clients who ordinarily wouldn't get served," Long says.
