Feature Alum: Roger Kintzel

1970 B.A.
Publisher, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, Ga.

"A vibrant newspaper is absolutely critical to the functioning of the democratic society."

As a high school student, Roger Kintzel never expected to make headlines. That he could be college material was news to him. But his was not an uncommon story in the early days of Wright State. Student services counseled him on what courses to take, financial services helped set him up with the means to attend, and the faculty -- a crop of new Ph.D.'s -- were eager to help. "For someone like me, that made a huge difference," he says. "I've had some great breaks in my life and one of them was Wright State."

The other important break in his life -- a 23-year career with Cox Enterprises, Inc. -- also began in Dayton. Today, as publisher of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the flagship paper in the Cox Enterprises' chain, Kintzel oversees the flow of information at the newspaper of record in a city of more than four million.

Favorite Quote: "It's amazing how much you can get done if you don't worry about who gets the credit." Richard Hettrick

Last Book Read: Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, Joseph J. Ellis

Future Plans: It's a real honor and privilege to run a newspaper of this size in a city that is evolving into one of America's greatest. I plan to work out my term and make the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the best it can be.
