2018 Classroom Upgrade

This summer CaTS will be performing upgrades on electronic classroom and computer lab equipment.

On this page:

Upgrades Being Performed

Unless otherwise noted, all Registrar-scheduled electronic classrooms and computer labs will undergo the following changes:

  • Instructor workstation - Mac Mini computers will be replaced with Dell 5050 Windows 10 PCs. Read more here.
  • Computer lab student stations - All stations will be upgraded to Windows 10.

Training Options

If you would like to receive training on the new equipment being installed in the classroom, send an email to cats-training@wright.edu and a CaTS training representative will be in contact with you.

Additionally, all classrooms and computer labs will be unlocked beginning August 20, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., if you wish to test the new equipment. If you would like access to a classroom or computer lab during normal business hours before August 20, please contact the CaTS Help Desk at (937) 775-4827 to request access.

Mac Mini to Dell 5050 Transition

This summer, all instructor workstations with Mac Mini computers will be replaced with Dell 5050 Windows PCs. See the "What's New" section below to learn more about these new systems. We realize this change could be a concern for Mac users, so we have listed several alternatives for you in the Preferred Options for Mac Users section below.

What's New

  • All electronic classrooms will now run Windows 10. There will no longer be an option to run a Mac OS from the instructor workstation unless using one of the options mentioned below.
  • The power button is now located on the Dell 5050 under the workstation (pictured below).
  • USB ports are now located on the rack under the workstation (pictured below).

For Mac Users Using a USB Drive

CaTS highly recommends putting your classroom materials into Pilot to access during your class. However if you will be using a USB drive, test all of your course content to make sure it's formatted correctly in Windows 10 before Fall Semester begins. There are two options available to you:

  1. Come to the Help Desk during our open hours and test content using a self-service cart set up in 025 Library Annex.
  2. Schedule a one-on-one training session in your classroom using the Classroom Training Request form. Check the schedule in the Electronic Classrooms and Computer Lab Upgrade Schedule above to ensure your training date is after the upgrade has been performed in your classroom.

Preferred Options for Mac Users

The newly-installed Dell PCs with Windows 10 are able to access the majority of services, apps, programs, and websites that you would need for your classes. However, CaTS realizes this change could be a concern for Mac users, so we have listed our preferred alternatives for those of you who still need to use a Mac in the classroom.

1

Apple TV

Using an Apple TV gives Mac users the ability to use their own devices in the classroom.

2

Port Adapters

At the request of the faculty member, port adapters will be provided free of charge.

CaTS will purchase:

  • Display Port to VGA adapters (for older MacBook models)
  • USB-C to VGA adapters (for newer MacBook models)

Important Note: CaTS will not be removing existing HDMI cables from the classrooms.

To request a port adapter, fill out the following form: Mac Adapter Request

Other Options for Mac Users

If you have specific requirements that can not be satisfied by using the Windows PC located in the classroom or by using an Apple TV or port adapter, faculty members with approval from CaTS may be able to utilize one of the two options below.

Important Note: Due to limited resources in both staff and equipment, CaTS must approve your use of the options listed below, and first priority will be given to those that would be most impacted by the removal of Mac Minis in the classroom.

MacBook Air

Depending on demand, CaTS will purchase approximately 10 MacBook Air laptops with the appropriate adapters and travel bag for those faculty who need to use a Mac in the classroom. These could be checked out from the CaTS Help Desk at the start of the semester and returned once the semester is over.

Mac Mini Carts

CaTS will repurpose 10 Mac Mini cart systems, and faculty members will be able to schedule classroom delivery for the semester. CaTS staff will deliver, setup, and tear down for each requested class.

To submit a request for one of these options, fill out the following form: Mac Checkout or Mac Classroom Delivery for Faculty
