AAUP Faculty members can cover an Older Adult Child (dependent child age 26 to 28) on their Wright State University healthcare plan in accordance with State of Ohio regulations.
In 2011, the federal law extended healthcare coverage of eligible dependent children to age 26. Children dependents are removed from your healthcare plans the last day of the month in which they turn 26. At this time, you have the option to elect continuing Older Adult Child healthcare coverage for your dependents ages 26-28, provided the following criteria are met:
- Child not reached his/her 28th birthday
- Fits into one of the following categories: biological child, adopted child or step-child
- Reside in Ohio or be a full-time student at an accredited institution of higher education
- Must be unmarried
- Is not employed by an employer that offers any health benefit plan under which child is eligible for coverage
- Not eligible for coverage under Medicaid or Medicare
- The cost for this Older Adult Child coverage is an additional “after-tax” surcharge premium which is in addition to the “pre-tax” healthcare premiums you currently have selected for your coverage (Employee + 1 or Employee + 2 or more).

During Open Enrollment, whether continuing your Older Adult Child enrollment or adding a new enrollment, you will need to select coverage which includes your older adult child for your elected medical, dental and/or vision benefits. Then for each of these benefits (if applicable), you will need to make a second election for your older adult child, which represents the “after-tax” surcharge.
For example: An employee, spouse and 1 older adult child choses “PPO 90/10” medical plan. The employee will need to choose the “PPO 90/10” with coverage for “Employee + 2 or more” AND then needs to make a second election, “PPO 90/10 Older Adult,” which represents the surcharge.
Once your enrollment has been submitted, if a “NEW” enrollment, you will receive an email with instructions to complete the following two forms and return them immediately to Human Resources:
For a “CONTINUING” enrollment, you will also receive the same email although you do not have to submit any paperwork, we do ask that you note the eligibility criteria you had previously certified, since the conditions must still exist.
After your election, whether during the year or during Open Enrollment, changes to your Older Adult elections, can only be made within 30 days of experiencing a qualifying life event, such as birth, marriage, divorce, obtainment or loss in other healthcare coverage, etc.
