Police Officer I

Full-time/Part-time Status:  100% FTE

Pay Rate:  $15.94/hr

Pay Grade:  PO1

Position Summary: Under close supervision from a higher-level law enforcement officer or supervisor, and in accordance with broad operating procedures; receives instruction on purpose and responsibilities of a police officer, performs a variety of university law enforcement tasks; provides safety and security to university faculty, staff students and visitors, facilities and grounds at a state-supported university with student population over 16,000; enforces all applicable state and local laws, codes and ordinances, university policies, procedures and regulations.

Education/Experience: Must be at least 21 years of age, have the ability to gather and classify information, and be able to prepare clear and concise police reports. Must have high school diploma plus two years of directly related work experience or Associate degree or Bachelor degree in a directly related field. Must be able to pass an entrance level written examination, physical examination, polygraph examination, psychological examination, and an extensive background investigation. May be required to undergo an annual physical examination and periodic psychological and/or psychiatric examination as directed by the department. A valid Ohio driver’s license required. OPOTA Basic Peace Officer Training Certification.

Working Conditions: Hazardous working conditions exposed to inclement weather, potential of bodily harm in criminal investigations, and other fire and public safety conditions. Will work rotating shifts, including weekends and evenings. May work outside in adverse weather conditions. Emergency response is an integral part of this position; required response to exigent circumstances during off duty hours is required. Overtime may be required. Punctuality is required.


WSU Testing/Examinations Required: Police Officer 1 test. Written physical, polygraph, psychological, and an extensive background investigation.


Position Description: 

Patrols grounds and buildings on foot and in vehicle to ensure public safety and security of facilities by enforcing all appropriate codes, laws, and regulations, while maintaining a positive public relations image. Provides customer service and assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors. Maintains positive employee relations with department personnel, university community, and external community members. Responds to law enforcement and public safety emergencies, complaints, and enforces university and State parking regulations. Conducts self-initiated patrols. Participates in community service activities. Maintains and cleans equipment; provides escorts for negotiable university assets. Provides additional patrols via police mountain bicycle for strategic campus areas, to include pedestrian routes, remote parking and residential communities. Demonstrates ability to maintain composure and perform reliable under pressure, to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions, and demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Must be able to work effectively with all levels of the department and have the ability to work well with a diverse population. Must exhibit outstanding conflict resolution skills.

Receives instruction on purpose and responsibilities of a police officer, standards of performance and ethics, uniform regulations and care, public and human relations, laws of evidence, methods of arrest, search and seizure investigation, handling of prisoners and court conduct, patrolling and enforcement techniques and use and maintenance of firearms.

Conducts investigations of criminal, non-criminal and accident incidents following operating procedures and completes appropriate administrative duties related to such activities. Engages in investigative detention situations. Conducts interrogations. Develops problem-solving plans to address residential community problems. Completes follow-up investigations as assigned. Demonstrates the ability to exercise good judgment, interpersonal, and customer service skills, and the ability to maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information. Apprehends, arrests, and processes criminal violations; files affidavits, serves warrants, appears in court and testifies in criminal and judicial affairs proceedings. Processes OMVI and DUI’s. Performs required law enforcement, safety and security functions at special events to ensure public safety and welfare. Monitors metal detectors to scan patrons, visitors and packages for weapons and other illegal or unauthorized items.

Performs other university law enforcement duties as assigned and assists other local enforcement agencies during emergencies as assigned.
