Job Classification Plan

With the new classification plan, job classification numbers, job series and placement of positions are structured in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code.  Below is a chart showing placement of each classified, non-bargaining unit position.  It should be noted that the job classification numbers no longer relate to a pay grade.  This brief summary will help you to understand the logic of the system.  For example, if you are classified as a Word Processing Coordinator in the Administrative Support Division, Clerical and Administrative Support Branch, Administrative Support Group, Series 1, you are eligible under First Opportunities to apply for other jobs listed in that same Division, Branch, Group, and Series -- Office Assistant 1, Office Assistant 2, Medical Student Coordinator, Administrative Specialist, Word Processing Coordinator, Office Services Coordinator, Administrative Support Coordinator, Department Support Support Coordinator.

Job Class/Classification – A group of positions with a set of common characteristics;  duties and responsibilities described by the same title; common essential functions; common knowledge, skill and ability required; have the same pay level assigned; positions are assigned to a classification based on the highest level job duty that is at least 20% of the job. 

Job Classification Series – A group of job classifications similar in the work performed to warrant similar titles but different levels.  Job series are usually associated with a promotional series.  Generally, job classifications in a series overlap in duties.  Job classifications in each series should be listed from lowest to highest. 

Job Classification Group – All job classifications must be assigned to a group of similar classifications.  A group can consist of one or more job series. 

Job Classification Branch – A branch consists of one or more similar groups.  Within the university’s plan, there are eight branches. 

Job Classification Division – A division consists of one or more branches.  Within the university’s plan, there are seven divisions.
