not accept the RA position.

Leader2Leader Conference – Saturday,
April 26, 2008 , 8:30am – 5:00pm , WSU Student
Union
All
new & returning RAs are expected
to attend and participate in the Leader2Leader
Conference
Return to campus and move into fall assignment
– Saturday, August 23, 2008
You
will be expected to arrive and move into your
room by no later than 4:00pm on August 23 rd .
Specific arrival times & check-in process
will need to be coordinated with your Community
Director. Information will be sent to you during
the summer confirming your check-in process.
RA Training – Sunday, August
24, 2008 thru Thursday, September
4, 2008 ; day, evening and weekend activities
will take place during training. The Office of
Residence Services is committed to employing a
competent and a highly trained staff who are capable
of demonstrating outstanding leadership, while
effectively handling any and all situations that
might arise in our residential communities during
the year. As such, staff training for Resident
Assistants will commence on August 24, 2008 .
Be advised that training will be time intensive
and you should not plan outside activities during
training (weekends/Labor Day holiday included).
Training will continue until opening day when
our first-year students arrive on campus. You
can expect training to be both very serious and
fun.
Opening Weekend – Friday, September
5, 2008 – Sunday, September 7, 2008
Opening
weekend, and the first week of classes during
the quarter, is a very important time for our
residential communities. This is the time when
our residents are getting acquainted and becoming
comfortable with their new community. Floor/unit
standards are established during the opening days
of the year, and you establish yourself as the
leader of your community. As a RA, you will be
expected to be highly visible and available during
this time.
The
work you do as a Resident Assistant impacts the
first impression your residents receive of Wright
State University and enhances the quality of their
living experience. Your actions will have an influence
on student experiences with regards to academic
and living success. Therefore, it is imperative
that our RAs be highly available and visible in
the residential communities.
Opening Weekend – Winter and Spring Quarters
All
RAs are expected to be available in their communities
during opening weekend for the winter and spring
Quarters. This is a time to assist our new residents
who are moving in, as well as touch base with
the returning residents. All RAs will be expected
to return to the campus prior to 12:00noon on
January 2, 2008 to prepare for Winter Quarter
new resident check in. All RAs will be expected
to return to the campus prior to 7:00pm on March
29, 2009 for Spring Quarter new resident check
in.
Closing Weeks & Weekends
To
complete the job duties satisfactorily, it is
necessary for RAs to be in their offices/communities,
unless in exams, during closing weeks in order
to process check-outs, communicate with residents,
and close the buildings down. RAs generally are
the last residents to leave the campus during
closing weekends.
Winter Renewal Training – Friday,
January 2, 2009 ; 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Winter
Renewal Training is an opportunity for our staff
to come together at the beginning of the Winter
Quarter for a brief time where we can touch base,
get rejuvenated, and focus our attention on the
remainder of the year. This time will be utilized
with on-going training, goal setting, staff updates,
and team building activities.
2009-2010 RA Selection Process (Dates:
TBA – usually late January or early to mid February)
All
current RAs are expected to participate in the
RA Selection Process for the following academic
year.
RA Office Hours
As
outlined in the position description, each RA
is expected to serve three office hours per week
in the community offices (including during scheduled
holiday & break coverage). Scheduling of the
specific office hours will be determined during
staff training in August, and at the beginning
of each subsequent academic quarter.
RA Leadership Development and Social Activities
Resident
Assistants will be expected to participate in
a Residential Leadership Development Program.
This in-service program will be developmental
in nature and will be designed to enhance the
leadership skills of our staff. Most sessions
are offered during the evenings or weekends. Advance
notice of dates will be provided during staff
training in August. Residence Services recognizes
that RAs will need to step back and relax from
time to time. Therefore, periodic social activities
will be planned for the RAs during the academic
year. Unless designated otherwise, the social
activities will be optional for participation.
Outside Employment
An
effective Resident Assistant must be able to balance
academic requirements, job requirements andstill
maintain a personal life. Given that all three
require high degrees of time, outside employment
activities are limited to no more than 10 hours
per week and must be approved in advance
by your supervisor.
Paid student leadership positions constitute employment
(ie. UAB Executive Board, Student Government,
etc.).
Working During the Academic/Holiday Breaks
RA
staff responsibilities require you to stay on
campus for one week (5 days) during one of the
academic/holiday break periods. The specific break
duty dates will be coordinated with your supervisor
at the beginning of the academic year. RAs will
work scheduled primary and back-up duty, as well
as serve office hours, during these duty dates.
Daily Responsibilities
RA
responsibilities are outlined in the RA Position
Description. It is recommended that you review
the position description before applying for the
job and/or signing the employment agreement in
order to ensure that you are comfortable with
all aspects of the job.
Academic Class Load
Due
to the time demands of the RA position, Resident
Advisors are prohibited from taking more than
the normal 18 hour credit load. Special exceptions
must be approved, in advance, by the Associate
Director for Residence Life. Individuals who desire
to take graduate (Master's, Doctorate, and Medical
School ) classes will need to obtain approval
from the Associate Director for Residence Life
prior to being employed in the RA position.

RA Class Employment Requirement
– EDL 410/660
All
new Community Advisors are required
to take the EDL 410/660 RA Class. The class will
be offered during the Spring Quarter, 2008
. Three sections of the class will be offered
and new RAs will be required to enroll (2 academic
credits) for one of the three sections. There
will be no exceptions to the enrollment policy
– if a RA has not previously taken the class,
he or she will need to enroll for the class during
the spring quarter. The class is only offered
during the spring quarter.
The
three sections are tentatively scheduled for :
EDL 410 Section 01, Wednesdays, 1:30pm – 3:30pm
EDL 410 Section 02, Thursdays, 4:00pm – 6:00pm
EDL 410 Section 03, Mondays, 4:00pm-6:00pm
