•  Opening Weekend – Friday, September 5, 2008 – Sunday, September 7, 2008

Opening weekend, and the first week of classes during the quarter, is a very important time for our residential communities. This is the time when our residents are getting acquainted and becoming comfortable with their new community. Floor/unit standards are established during the opening days of the year, and you establish yourself as the leader of your community. As a RA, you will be expected to be highly visible and available during this time.

The work you do as a Resident Assistant impacts the first impression your residents receive of Wright State University and enhances the quality of their living experience. Your actions will have an influence on student experiences with regards to academic and living success. Therefore, it is imperative that our RAs be highly available and visible in the residential communities.

•  Opening Weekend – Winter and Spring Quarters

All RAs are expected to be available in their communities during opening weekend for the winter and spring Quarters. This is a time to assist our new residents who are moving in, as well as touch base with the returning residents. All RAs will be expected to return to the campus prior to 12:00noon on January 2, 2008 to prepare for Winter Quarter new resident check in. All RAs will be expected to return to the campus prior to 7:00pm on March 29, 2009 for Spring Quarter new resident check in.

•  Closing Weeks & Weekends

To complete the job duties satisfactorily, it is necessary for RAs to be in their offices/communities, unless in exams, during closing weeks in order to process check-outs, communicate with residents, and close the buildings down. RAs generally are the last residents to leave the campus during closing weekends.

•  Winter Renewal Training – Friday, January 2, 2009 ; 1:00pm – 5:00pm

Winter Renewal Training is an opportunity for our staff to come together at the beginning of the Winter Quarter for a brief time where we can touch base, get rejuvenated, and focus our attention on the remainder of the year. This time will be utilized with on-going training, goal setting, staff updates, and team building activities.

•  2009-2010 RA Selection Process (Dates: TBA – usually late January or early to mid February)

All current RAs are expected to participate in the RA Selection Process for the following academic year.

•  RA Office Hours

As outlined in the position description, each RA is expected to serve three office hours per week in the community offices (including during scheduled holiday & break coverage). Scheduling of the specific office hours will be determined during staff training in August, and at the beginning of each subsequent academic quarter.

•  RA Leadership Development and Social Activities

Resident Assistants will be expected to participate in a Residential Leadership Development Program. This in-service program will be developmental in nature and will be designed to enhance the leadership skills of our staff. Most sessions are offered during the evenings or weekends. Advance notice of dates will be provided during staff training in August. Residence Services recognizes that RAs will need to step back and relax from time to time. Therefore, periodic social activities will be planned for the RAs during the academic year. Unless designated otherwise, the social activities will be optional for participation.

•  Outside Employment

An effective Resident Assistant must be able to balance academic requirements, job requirements andstill maintain a personal life. Given that all three require high degrees of time, outside employment activities are limited to no more than 10 hours per week and must be approved in advance by your supervisor. Paid student leadership positions constitute employment (ie. UAB Executive Board, Student Government, etc.).

•  Working During the Academic/Holiday Breaks

RA staff responsibilities require you to stay on campus for one week (5 days) during one of the academic/holiday break periods. The specific break duty dates will be coordinated with your supervisor at the beginning of the academic year. RAs will work scheduled primary and back-up duty, as well as serve office hours, during these duty dates.

•  Daily Responsibilities

RA responsibilities are outlined in the RA Position Description. It is recommended that you review the position description before applying for the job and/or signing the employment agreement in order to ensure that you are comfortable with all aspects of the job.

•  Academic Class Load

Due to the time demands of the RA position, Resident Advisors are prohibited from taking more than the normal 18 hour credit load. Special exceptions must be approved, in advance, by the Associate Director for Residence Life. Individuals who desire to take graduate (Master's, Doctorate, and Medical School ) classes will need to obtain approval from the Associate Director for Residence Life prior to being employed in the RA position.
