John Herrman has worked for Gizmodo, Popular Mechanics, and Buzzfeed. Before coming to The New York Times, he was co-editor of The Awl. He has spent his career writing about technology with a particular focus on the cultures and economies that have grown on major internet platforms. At Buzzfeed and The Awl, he documented the rise of Twitter and Facebook and their destabilizing, transformative effects on the larger media ecosystem. At The Times, he will continue to focus on internet platforms as they move to the center of the American discourse. His most recent feature analyzed the pre-election rise of extremely popular hyper-partisan news and media on Facebook.
