Federal National SMART Grant

The Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant is a federal grant for undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree. Student applicants must meet eligibility requirements to receive federal student aid, meet satisfactory academic progress requirements and meet eligibility criteria below. The Federal SMART Grant is a form of gift aid that does not have to be repaid.

Federal SMART Grant Overview
How to Apply Student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Eligibility Criteria
  • Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient.
  • Be a junior/senior majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. (View a list of eligible majors.)
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulate GPA (based on a 4.0 scale).
Annual Award Maximum*

$4,000

NOTE: The amount paid to the student's account will vary by enrollment. See "Aid Adjustments" on our Disbursing Aid page for more information.

Enrollment Requirement Student must be enrolled at least half-time (at least 6 undergraduate credit hours).
Disbursement For a given term, grant funds are disbursed no sooner than 10 days prior to the student's first attend date. Funds are applied directly to the student's account. If the student's account is paid in full and any Federal SMART Grant funds remain, the Office of the Bursar will issue the remaining grant funds to the student in the form of a refund.
*A student can receive the award maximum only once as a junior and once as a senior, and a student may not receive Federal SMART Grant funds from more than one school at the same time. As a result, a student who receives a portion of their award maximum at another school may not qualify for their entire award maximum at WSU. A junior is defined as a student who has between 90 and 134 undergraduate credit hours earned/transferred to WSU. A senior is defined as a student who has between 135 and 180 undergraduate credit hours earned/transferred to WSU.
