Once a student
accepts a loan on his or her Award Notice, there may be additional steps
required to secure the loan. These additional steps or requirements can
be found on WINGS Express after accepting a loan. When accepting a student loan, it is extremely
important that you follow all of the instructions carefully on your Award
Notice. Read the items on your Award Notice under "Additional Information"
after you've accepted a loan. Timing is crucial to loan processing, so
be sure you complete all of the required steps as soon as possible. Delays
could result in the cancellation of your award.
The
steps needed to complete loan processing depend upon the type of loan
accepted by the student. There are three types of student loans:
NOTE:
Students cannot accept a Parent PLUS Loan. Parents who wish to apply for
a PLUS Loan can visit our Federal Parent PLUS Loan page for more information
on how the parent can apply.
Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP)
Loans
FFELP
loans are federal student loans whose funding comes from private lenders.
FFELP loans that can be accepted by students consist of the following:
After
accepting a FFELP loan on his or her Award Notice via WINGS Express, the following requirements will appear on WINGS Express. The
student must complete the following tasks in order to receive FFELP loan funds:
1.
Loan Period Selection. You must indicate the quarters in which
you would like borrow the FFELP loan(s) for the aid year. The loan amount(s)
accepted will be evenly distributed over the quarters selected, up to
your cost of attendance.
2. Loan Entrance Counseling. Loan Entrance Counseling must be completed one time only.
3.
Master Promissory Note (MPN). When completing an MPN or eMPN, you must choose a lender for a FFELP
loan. Visit our Lender List page for a partial list of lenders. If you have already completed an MPN, you do not need to complete a new MPN, unless you wish to change your lender.
NOTE:
WSU must also certify your FFELP loan in order for you to receive funding.
Loan certification occurs no sooner than May prior to the start of the
upcoming aid year for summer aid and no sooner than July prior to start
of the upcoming aid year for fall, winter and spring aid. By certifying
a FFELP loan, WSU has verified that the loan type and amount is valid
at the time of certification. Typically Great
Lakes Educational Loan Services is the loan servicer for FFELP loans
borrowed at WSU.

will certify the loan provided the student is eligible. At the time of

Notice as an accepted loan. See our Alternative Loans page for more information
