Physical Science Enhancement Program (PSEP)
This institute addresses teaching physical science in grades 8-12. The institute will address energy, modern physics topics, and technological applications. Modern physics phenomena provide the basis for current technologies such as digital cameras, laser eye surgery, solar cells, and nuclear energy. This course will focus on integrating the standards and topics related to energy with concepts of modern physics, such as quantization, using real life technologies as contexts for learning. Participants will study how the sun was formed, how it produces electromagnetic waves and solar energy and how solar energy affects life on Earth and energy conversions on Earth (plants, animals, weather patterns, etc.) Participants will investigate current energy sources (renewable and nonrenewable), their conversions and human and environmental impacts. Alternative energy, such as solar, wind and nuclear, will be investigated with their potential advantages and concerns.
Since a Life Sciences program is being offered simultaneously, you will have opportunities to coordinate with science teachers in your district.
Program Hours:
June 15 - July 2
8:30am - 3:45pm Monday - Thursday.
Each day, participants will receive a lunch break. Meals are not provided, however there are food options located both on and off campus within a short distance.
