Life Science Enhancement Program (LSEP)
The biology institute will use a variety of curricular materials to situate teacher learning in project-based investigations of plants during the three-week institute. Life science concepts and inquiry will be contextualized in a variety of real-world problems throughout the institute, with a particular emphasis on the use of technology and math to solve these problems. During this inquiry, participants will consider plant biology from a cellular to ecosystem level. First, participants will investigate the life cycle of plants from seeds to reproductive organisms. In this process, the relationship between the structure and function of plant cells and tissues will be explored. Next, plant physiology will be examined, with a special focus on photosynthesis. These concepts will allow participants to connect plants’ individual functions with those it fills in the ecosystem as a whole. Last, participants will learn and explore socio-scientific issues involving plants, such as invasive species, economic/agricultural impacts of genetically modified crops, and the increasing myriad of uses of soybeans and corn.
Throughout the institute, inquiry activities will focus on the design of solid scientific experiments and the analysis of quantitative results. Participants will use the findings of these activities to build scientific explanations and arguments.
Program Hours:
June 15 - July 2
8:30am - 3:45pm Monday - Thursday.
Each day, participants will receive a lunch break. Meals are not provided, however there are food options located both on and off campus within a short distance.
