How do you navigate from a boat that has no deck (canoe) or a small deck (kayak)? The answer is that we have to prepare ourselves beforehand and apply it to our on-the-water trip. This short workshop will introduce concepts of map and compass, reading and using charts, dead reckoning and navigating, as well as float planning. Dene Berman is an ACA Instructor Trainer who has field experience with Outward Bound, Wilderness Education Association, and Leave No Trace. He has used Navigation skills in places as disparate as Alaska, Baja California, The Everglades, and Northern Saskatchewan. Participants should bring a handheld compass, ruler, protractor, pencil, and a piece of string.
