As teachers, we design courses to help students learn important skills – how to think critically, how to communicate effectively – that will serve them well in higher education and in the workplace. But what if everything we were told about learning was wrong? And what if there was a way to learn more, and more deeply, with less effort? What would that mean for teachers and students alike? In How We Learn: The Surprising Truth about When, Where, and Why It Happens, award-winning science writer Benedict Carey analyzes decades of cognitive psychology and education research to identify important truths about how our brains absorb and retain information. Join CTL Faculty Director Sean Pollock in discussing the work’s implications for teaching and learning. In addition to learning how to learn more effectively, participants will discuss how insights from cognitive science can be incorporated into active-learning course design. Wednesday, January 21, 2:30 p.m. to 3:25 p.m., in 023 Dunbar Library.
