GLOBAL MATRIX III: AN INTERNATIONAL PRINT EXHIBITION

October 31-December 9, 2012

A Unique Approach to Multiples, International Printmaking Exhibit Makes Its Way to Wright State

The Purdue University Art Galleries’ highly successful exhibition, Global Matrix, returns to Wright State University in its third incarnation in Global Matrix III: An International Print Exhibition. The exhibition runs from Wednesday, October 31, 2012 through Sunday, December 9, 2012. To date, the Global Matrix exhibits have featured a total of 165 works representing 142 individual artists from 31 countries around the world.

The exhibition title refers to the “matrix” inherent in the process of printmaking. The image is cut or carved away from a plate, creating a negative, which is then printed through a variety of methods to create the final, positive image. Printmaking is both a prolific and democratic medium; the variety of media and flexibility of artistic expression available to the printmakers in this exhibition illustrates the depth and beauty of fine art prints. Styles and techniques identified with particular printmaking enclaves in various parts of the world can readily be seen in the works of artists from different cultures, separated by thousands of miles.

Craig Martin, Director of Purdue University Galleries, will give a gallery talk on Sunday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries, A132 Creative Arts Center. An opening reception will follow from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Wright State University Associate Professor of Art and Art History, Kimberly Vito, and her colleagues at Purdue University, Kathryn Reeves, Professor of Art and Design, and Craig Martin, Director of Purdue University Art Galleries, along with Sean Caulfield, Associate Professor of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, return as the curatorial staff for The Global Matrix III.

“Visitors will see a wide range of techniques, such as traditional lithography, intaglio, silkscreen, and relief, as well as, unconventional combination and digital printings,” says Professor Vito. “The subject matter varies between representational landscapes and figures to more innovative image arrangements."

Global Matrix III is supported by the Friends of the Galleries, Wright State University College of Liberal Arts, and the Ohio Arts Council.

Gallery hours are Wednesday and Friday 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Thursday 10:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., and Saturday and Sunday 12:00 to 4:00 P.M.
