35 Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say: Surprising Things We Say That Widen The Diversity Gap by Maura Cullen, Book Group
Tuesday, October 16, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, in 023 Dunbar Library.

Led by Carl Brun, Ph.D., Chair and Professor, Social Work; Simone Polk, Assistant Vice President for Student Services, Student Affairs.

Dr. Maura Cullen is widely considered one of the nation's foremost authorities on diversity issues on college campuses today. With over 25 years of experience as a trainer and keynote speaker, she received her doctorate in Social Justice and Diversity Education from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Cullen is the founder of the Diversity Student Summit, a founding faculty member of the Social Justice Training Institute and author of 35 Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say.

Have you ever heard someone say, "I don't see color...", or "I treat everyone the same..." or maybe "Some of my best friends are..." Then this book discussion group is for you!

Dr. Cullen's book is a quick read, yet a very powerful and exploratory look at what we say and how we say it. In just four chapters, this book takes the reader on a journey through, for example, "setting the stage," "10 core concepts," "35 dumb things well-intended people say," and "6 smart steps for well-intended people."

The book allows the reader to examine and evaluate his or her own communication to and with others, but more importantly, offers strategic steps on improving communication to enhance the quality of our relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, visitors and family members!

Call x4522 to reserve a spot and make arrangements to receive your complimentary copy of the book.
