Recently, many national stakeholders have called for an increase in the number of STEM-educated graduates who will keep pushing the forefront of scientific knowledge, and also for highly qualified STEM teachers to prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers. As we prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers for their future careers, we must focus on preparing them for professional practice. A key practice emphasized in physics is making models of physical systems; specifically, the ability to represent physical systems in multiple ways – such as mathematically, graphically, or diagrammatically – and to use those representations to predict the behavior of that physical system. In this talk, I will present a research program, which aims to understand how students develop expertise in creating physical models.
