DATE: Nov 19, 2013 (Tue)
TIME: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
PLACE: WSU Student Union 010 – Emerald Room
TOPIC: Research through the eyes of an Avatar
AUDIENCE: WSU Faculty and Staff
SPEAKER: Dr. Rob Williams, research director AFRL Discovery Lab

The AFRL Discovery Lab is going into its 7th year as AFRL’s premiere outside-the-fence research program focused on “… accelerating today’s technology innovations while growing tomorrow’s technology leaders… ”. Dr. Williams will speak on AFRL Discovery Lab’s year round research internship program (Year at the Edge) and its national 100-student summer component (Summer at the Edge) as opportunities for research collaborations in UAS, autonomy, virtual reality, sensors & smart phones, robotics, 3D printing, human computer interfaces, and biomedical innovations.

A major thrust is hybridizing the Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) concept with “avatar” technology (OpenSim) for a Virtual Discovery Center (VDC) of massive scale aka “Research MOOC”. This will enable and require collaborations in a broad range of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and the arts. Dr. Williams will provide an overview of the AFRL VDC concept as an opportunity for funded collaborations of interested faculty & students.

Location: The Emerald Room (SU010) is on the lower level of the Student Union, conveniently located just below the Union Market dining facility and at the entrance to the campus tunnel.
